external hard drive question

I was just wondering if an external hard drive affects the speed of the hddvr at all?
By speed I mean scrolling through the guide, bringing up menus and searches etc.
I was curious if it either slowed it down, sped it up or had no effect at all.

Mostly no effect, though any time a HR series receiver gets the drive past 20% or so remaining space it starts slowing down. As about 5% it gets really bad.

I have used drives as small 300GB and as big as 2TB with similiar results.
