Is there anyway to watch programs from an external hard drive with a de-activated receiver? I currently have a 922 and a 622 but am looking to 'cut the cord'. However, I have a lot of movies on there, that I don't want to lose. Is it possible to still watch these?

Recordings are no longer available on a deactivated receiver by default, so by extension, they are not available from an external hard drive.

If I were you, I'd keep the 622 and just go with the Welcome Pack until you're done watching those programs.
How do you burn to DVD? I didn't think it was possible to read the files on the external unless you were going through a receiver?

One catch is that it is real-time recording. Unlike ripping a disc which can rip the image at a faster rate, from the DVR, it'll take time, no less than the program length. And it can't be programmed, ie, you can't record a bunch of shows overnight. You need to start fresh with each recording. Depending on the size of the drive hooked to the receiver, that could take roughly forever.
A 2 TB drive, transferring 8 hours a day would take probably no less than 250 days! Goodness help you if you've recorded SD programming!
You have to watch the program and send the video to the DVD recorder (or computer encoder). It is a real time thing.
If you prioritized what you wanted to watch most, you can obviously do it in less time, but it won't be any less than the length of your programming.
Sporting events, Forensic Files episodes, classic game shows (for the wife), documentaries, etc.
I agree, I have some special events that are not generally available on EHD, special tributes at begining of sporting events etc... Short clips from morning shows or shows like PTI and ATH often about Uconn sports. We had a tornado 1/4 mile behind my house and have clips of neighbor who took video and the aftermath that was on local TV. Things like that I will watch when I think of it. In my case if I lose them I do, even though I have a DVD recorder I don't re record them.
So, I'm basically out of luck unless I watch the programs now, before I cut the cord, and have the output of my receiver connected through a DVD recorder or some type of encoder connected to my computer? I was really hoping there was a simple way to watch them after I get rid of Dish...
Thanks for answering the "what isn't available". I wasn't trying to be a jerk about it, was just curious what wasn't there. I didn't even think about news, and things of that nature. Once you put it on DVD, have you ever considered uploading it to a cloud or anything like that?
If you disconnect the LNB wire from the receiver before you stop your service it won't get the shut off signal right away and should give you a while longer to watch the recordings.
Once you quit Dish, any recordings on the ehd are toast, even if you come back to dish at alater point. The ehd is keyed to the account. Coming back gives you a new account. The only thing you can do is go to the cheapest level and pay that amount each month.
I have a question about disconnecting the cable from the box. In theory it works, and has been proven. For atleast 7 days. The question I have, is if it remains connected to internet, would it know it is no longer an active account?
