External Hard Disk Content: VIP211 and VIP622

This maybe embeded in another thread but I am going to ask anyway. I have a bunch External Hard Disks with content that I archived from the VIP 622. I found it strange that if I wanted to watch this same external hard disk on the ViP 211, I wouldn't be able to do so. The VIP211 asks to reformat the Hard Disk instead. Is this the case?

Because of two distinct hardware/software platforms, EHDs between the 211s and 622/722/612 are not interchangeable.

It maybe a dissappointment but DISH has never claimed they were interchangable.
