Expressvu allignment questions

Hi - I'm new to the forum, and look forward to spending many hours going through various sections.

I'm in Edmonton, and I'm trying to allign my dish. I have transponder 11 showing on the setup menu, and I'm trying to get the Expressvu 91 bird.

My graph is jumping between wrong sat -unknown, to Locked, Bell Expressvu,
and the signal strength jumps from 30 to 92%

How do I properly allign the dish?

Also, if I'm correct, the 82 bird would be to the left of the 91 satellite, or am I wrong?

Hi:

First off, I don't receive HD on 82, so I can't help you there... but typically, you'd have to look up the "Look Angle" for your location - i.e. the compass heading and inclination (dish tilt) - for both satellites. I think you might even find that info in your manual... from that, and a bit of head scratching, you should be able to figure out your own answer.

The "bouncing" signal strength on 91 tells me you've got something minor but annoying going on. Most common culprits are a) vegetation, like a tree, swaying in the path of the signal b) a slight misalignment of your dish c) a bad cable and/or connection and/or connector crimp d) somebody close by with a poorly set up radio transmitter (grounding, or lack of it, either their grounding or yours, can affect your reception).

Points a, c and d will require some detective work, and possibly some climbing.

Check this first: In the absence of fancy testers, point b can be checked by having a helper eyeball the receiver's signal strength screen while you CAREFULLY rock the dish a bit (don't loosen anything until you figure out which way to move it!). Odds are good that you just need to do a minor tweak. The satellites do wander a wee bit, and your dish might have been set up when the birds were at one side of the slot. And of course, wind and/or winter weather can cause some shifting of mounts, etc.

Thanks for the advise. I found my lost satellite tuning meter, and with it connected, it was a quick and easy tweak to tune the system in. It was frustrating without the meter though.
