My Solo Node is mounted to the side of my house and is exposed to the elements. We have pretty deep eaves, so the only rain it will get is blown rain. I assume it's intended to be mounted outside anyway, but since I do not have a Joey, the "To Client" port is unused and thus exposed. Does anyone foresee a problem with this?

Your installer should have installed the terminator, mine did. I would call Dish and have them fix it. Thats part of dish's install docs for the J/H system. Like I said earlier in your other thread, I would have kid outta my house when he plugged that phone cord into the ethernet jack and said it was good.

I took the solo node and housed it into a Carlon 8X8x4 box and attached it to the wall where all the cables enter the house below the telephone nid. No way was I was going to allow the solo-node exposed the hot Vegas sun all day.

That's just it. I want less folks at my home. I don't want to play roulette with another one who then perhaps decides I need a new node / dish / LNB, etc. I always have to clean up after them - make better, cleaner loops, secure the block (or in this case the node). Everything works fine as it is, so if I can simply screw on a terminator myself to avoid the aggravation of having to stay home & wait for an installer, I'd rather do that.

So, just a plain old 75 ohm terminator is all I need?

Yes, nothing special. I know what you mean by having another person arrive only to possibly make things worse. I was thinking about getting another hopper from dish for $99 and 12 per month. But they would have to install it for me. Instead I'm going with a purchased VIP211k/EHD and run it myself off the 3rd unused port off the LNB. If I'm ever going to need another hopper, I'll just buy one along with a Duo mode and a DPP44 switch and install it myself.

Part of a correct Hopper install is to put terminators on unused ports. Could cause possible problems in the future.

I thought that I was the only one that used that kind of "reasoning"

I dropped by a local installer today. I told him what I needed & he pulled a bag full of them out of a drawer & asked how many I needed. I told him just 1,and he gave it to me free of charge.

I know it wouldn't cost more than a buck anyways, but it was a nice gesture given I've not given him any business.

We don't have a Radio Shack or anything like it within 30 miles.

?

This was a local retailer?

Just curious why you didn't use him for your install? If they have a good reputation it's always nice to support the local guys.

Keep in mind, Kerry Harris Satellite Service is not the installer that installed my system.

Of all the installs with DISH I've had over the years, Kerry Harris has never been the installer. The ones that pick up the order are from neighboring towns 20 and 40 miles away, while Kerry Harris is about 8 miles up the road.

It was explained to me that when you go through DISH, they basically put out a work order & anyone approved by DISH may pick up the order. I don't know if this is true or not.

You & I were typing at the same time. I don't believe it was my option to choose the local guy. When I call DISH or as in the recent case PM DIRT, I don't have that option. I know, in the past, I've requested Kerry Harris & I was told I couldn't do that.

I would much rather use Kerry Harris. He & his family have a good reputation around town. His brother owns a wrecker business in town. This is someone I occasionally see around town.

I would think just call up Kerry Harris directly next time instead of calling Dish or PMing DIRT.

Dish usually goes with the lowest bidder and you know what that means. Because you are lucky enough to have a good local retailer you should just call him directly.

Never did that before. I'd assumed the contract, deals, etc, would not be accessible to him as they are to DIRT or CSR. I guess being authorized dealer, he has that authority? Free install and all?

Dish does not send out orders to retailers unless that retailer is in their referral program. Even when in the referral program Dish will only send a new install to a retailer if they are overwhelmed with installs. We are a referral retailer and haven't gotten a new install from Dish in 6 years. We use to get a lot of them. So when you call Dish you will just get sent to one of their national offices that handle your area and they may be pretty far from you.

If you are concerned about not getting the same deals, don't be. Retailers provide the same promotions, there is no difference. If Dish did have a promotion that was only available through them you could still get it even though you got your Dish through a retailer. If you used a retailer and were not happy with their work you can still have dish handle your work in the future.

?So, as you can see, there are not really any extra benefits by calling Dish directly for service.
