Hello everyone,
I am a current E* customer seriously thinking about switching to D* due to
the current attractive programming prices.
My biggest problem is the up front equipment costs.
I currently have two VIP211 HD receivers, and a 625 dual tuner DVR receiver
for four TV's. I'm also waiting for a quote for an HD DVR from E*
To get a similar equipment setup to what I have now, I would need an HD-DVR, a
standard HD receiver, an standard DVR receiver, and a basic SD receiver.
I spoke to a CSR today and was offered a good deal on the Plus HD/DVR package,
but he would not budge on the up front equipment costs, which come to around $300.
I got my initial four room set up free with E* and have upgraded two receivers since with no out of pocket costs.
Does anyone at D* have the authority to negotiate or will I have to pay this to get D* service.
Thanks

D* is offering 4-room free deals and often will upgrade one of the receivers to either HD or a SD DVR at no additional cost. The going rate for a HD DVR is $299, but this is often reduced to $199 (sometimes less, but those deals were more common last fall). For what you are describing, 300 seems pretty reasonable. Once you are a subscriber, you can often get discounts on equipment upgrades, but this is typically only once every six months. They will also often throw in some programming credits (free Showtime for several months).

Given that you want three advanced receivers right up front, $300 does seem pretty reasonable cost wise.

You can always try calling back and see what another CSR says but don't be surprised if it's the same or higher.

through various rebates and such, my dads 3 dvrs and 1 standard receiver were around 300 out of pocket, but after rebates i think the total cost was about 20 dollars. but none of his are HD.... and its been so long since i got my original system I couldnt even tell you how much i spent on it.

Well, I'm making the switch to DTV. I hope I'm not disapointed.
My only real problem with Dish was a dispute over my bill. I changed programming packages in February. I had a written quote for the amount of my new package, and each of my bills since February have been any where from $10-$15 a month more than my quote. I tried to resolve this with three CSR's and an account specialist but none of them would honor my quote. I then e-mailed ceo@echostar.com on June 27. As of today July 5th I have not received a reply.

So, on to DTV
I wound up getting two HD receivers(H20) one DVR(R15) and a standard receiver for $199 up front with a $100 instant rebate, $100 credit on my first bill, and another $100 credit of $10 a month for ten months.
I also got an additional $10 a month credit for an additional eight months after that, plus I used a co-worker's account for a referral credit and we both get a $5 a month credit for ten months.
I'm getting the Plus HD/DVR package with the Sports Pack and HD access (which is half the cost of the Dish HD fee)
