EchoStar names Vogel president
Monday September 18, 12:06 pm ET
Carl Vogel on Monday was named president of EchoStar Communications Corp., effective immediately.
Vogel will oversee operations of the company's DISH satellite TV network. During his previous stint with the Englewood company (NASDAQ: DISH - News) as its president from 1994 to 1997, Vogel was part of the team that created and launched DISH in 1996.
He returned to EchoStar in May 2005 to become vice chairman of the company's board. He will retain that role. Before his return, Vogel served four years as president and CEO of cable TV company Charter Communications Inc. He resigned in January 2005 after the company lost $4.35 billion in 2004.
Vogel, who began his telecom career at Englewood-based Jones Intercable in 1983, also once served as vice president of Liberty Media Corp. and as chairman and CEO of Primestar Inc.
"We are very fortunate Carl has assumed this critical leadership role at EchoStar," said Charlie Ergen, the company's chairman and CEO.
EchoStar also hired Bernard Han as chief financial officer, effective Sept. 28. He succeeds David Rayner, who will take on the new job of executive vice president in charge of EchoStar's national installation and service network. Han last year left Northwest Airlines, where he was executive vice president and CFO, and before that was CFO and chief marketing officer for American West Airlines.
Rayner, the former senior vice president and CFO of Time Warner Telecom Inc., joined EchoStar in December 2004 as CFO.
Rayner will report to Vogel while Han will report to Ergen.
EchoStar has about 12.46 million subscribers to its DISH Network
