DVR's, once recorded, then what?

I'm considering upgrading to DirecTV's DVR service...
I know I'll have to go out and purchase a new reciever and pay the add'l $5 a month or whatever it is, but my question is this....

Once I do this, and start recording programs, can I retrieve the recordings or access them via a PC in some way in order to save those recordings?

... or do I just have to live with watching them a few times, then deleting them as room is needed for other recordings?

The new r10 tivo's can not be hacked to unable the USB ports so all you can do is watch and then delete them.

Use a video capture card and record to DVDs or fill your computer hard drive.
