Is there any new info concerning the crossover to WM9 and the subsequent release of the DVR? The new software is great, but I'm getting really tired of setting up manual timers every night to record my wife's soaps on the VCR. I need the DVR, and I'm willing to pay for it.

Where did you get that word? According to Amendment 1 to Form 10 as filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on July 29, 2004, VOOM has purchased 75,000 Motorola STBs and have an open purchase order for another 40,000 units. Here is the specific text of the filing:

"Satellite Receiver. The dish antennas are connected to a satellite receiver (IRD) designed and manufactured for us by Motorola. As of June 30, 2004 we had received over 75,000 satellite receivers from Motorola and had an additionally 40,000 on order under open purchase orders."

They have also stated in the report, "Motorola is currently the sole manufacturer of our Rainbow 1 satellite receivers. If this vendor is unable for any reason to produce receivers that work with the selected software, or produce them in a quantity sufficient to meet our requirements, it would impair our ability to acquire subscribers. Likewise, it would adversely affect our results of operations."

Obviously, while is may be advantageous to have a sole provider for installation/troubleshooting purposes, it is also a significant risk for their operations staff. However, nothing in the filing led me to believe that Motorola was being dumped. In fact:

"The initial receiver uses MPEG-2 compression technology but can be upgraded to MPEG-4 technology with a plug-in card, which is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2005. The Motorola receiver is the only receiver on the market that is designed to be easily upgradeable to MPEG-4. Customers will not need to replace their receivers to upgrade to MPEG-4."

Again, where did you get this information???

Well, my CSR (magic 8 ball) said today that "the DVR is expected at the end of 3Q04. It is already in beta testing and I could not get on the beta list." I already have two other DVRs, so I would have been a good candidate, IMHO. He did add me to the hopefuls list for the next beta project.

He would not give me any date for the WM9 module, but said Voom will send a tech out to do the install, even though he personally agreed that it would be a waste of manpower on something so easily installed. The party line is "Voom will not allow self installation".

Another data point: CSRs only get two days advance notice on new channels.

So, there are your rumors for the day.

that's great! Thousands of people taking the day off so an installer can drop by and plug in a cartridge. If he shows up, that is.

Have they learned nothing?

I figure we still have a few months left to raz/poke/beg Wilt to change the corperate attitude on this issue. Maybe we will get lucky and it will be bundled with the multi satellite dish install. They need to start working on that soon anyways.

What are you kidding? Your suggestion makes too much sense.
