I recently rented a house and the owner was set up with a DirecTV R15 DVR. I have been using an older DTV receiver for about six months when I decided to do the DVR thing.

I bought the DTV R15 off Ebay and hooked it up but I can't record the program unless I am watching it. The message says I only have one tuner hooked up.

I have a round dish with the single LNB and 2 outputs on two coax cables to the receiver. This is exactly the same setup as the previous owner. I thought the DVR was bad but when I switch the cables I still have the same problem. I hooked up my old regular receiver and one cable worked but the other didn't.

Why would one cable go dead after only six months being unhooked? Have they changed the signals or something? Do I need a different dish? (I can't understand why I would since this is exactly the same setup as before).

Please help!

When you switched the cables did the other tuner work or did the same one work? If it changed to the other tuner, then you need a new cable. Have you checked all of the connections?

DVR problem

Sorry, I should have been more clear.

1) Tuner one will work with one cable.
2) Tuner two will not work by switching cables. Same results when trying to run a regular receiver. Cable one is OK, cable 2 is dead.

My landlord said DirecTV installed his
DVR and he had no problems.

I am also wondering since this is refurb, is there anywhere to get the tuners checked and see if they are working right?

Hmmmmm. Try this. Connect both cables and do an unplug reboot.

If cable 2 is dead even with a standard receiver, then the issue is in the cable somewhere. It could be a bad connector, a bad cable, a splitter in line somewhere, or the cable is not even hooked up to the dish.

Do you know for certain where the second cable goes to from the wall plate?

Yeah, like I said. An R15 was hooked up before. When I activated the service I only had the regular single receiver. Could it be that DTV can control the inputs from the satellite?

No, I would rather get rid of the DVR than to deal with DTV crappy customer screw service. I learned the hard way.
