how do you know how much record time is left

Really, there's no "gauge". An easy was is to have "TiVo Suggestions" enabled. If its recording a LOT of suggestions, then you have a LOT of space left (as the TiVo will never cancel or use space planned for an upcoming recording). Hacking the TiVo, however, can give you a gauge via TiVoWeb or on the TV...

If you do a search on the TiVo Community forum for "free space indicator" you'll get a lot of results. Other search strings can be "recording time left", "recording time remaining", and even "gas gage" (yes that is misspelled)
