DVR recording issues

I sscheduled various shows to be DVRd(Mad Men, Tin Man, etc). Awhile later, I go in and there some of those shows are, only with recording times like 0:01(twice), for an hour long show. Others were also only partial records, it appeared.

I checked out the 0:01 episodes for Mad Men. The event started recording, at the end of the prior show, a movie both times, and you could see my desired show was coming up next. Then, it evidently shuts off, when my show starts.

Unsure yet, what happens on the longer, yet incomplete, episodes of Tin Man.

All I know is, this service is useless, and very aggravating, if I don' get the shows taped, that I want.

Thanks for any help.

What DVR do you have? VIP622, or 722. Is there any chance that someone was watching TV2 and when the channel switched to record your show they turned it back thus canceling your recording. Just speaking from experience

Either that or the DVR is crashing. Don't know which you have but my 522 crashes sometimes and the 622 is supposed to have heat issues according to some. If you have the 622 check the temp. If it is too high it might be overheating. Until you catch it stopping the recording you won't really know why it is happening.

It's a HD 722.

I thought TV 2 was separate from 1. If someone on TV 2 changes the channel, it will interrupt recording on TV1? I realize you can set DVR's from both TVs, so I do see how it could be impacted somehow.

It seems to be more than TV2 impacting, though, with the 1 minute record time. It's as if the recording starts a minute early, so as to not miss anything, purposely, but then got confused, and ended, at the end of that 1 minute, and the prior show.

On TV1 when you hit record the default is to record to TV2, and if someone is watching TV2 it's going to change the channel to your recording when its time. Now if your recording to TV1 then this is not you problem. If I remember right the default setting is to start recording 3 min before the show.

What you are referring to is called "Record Plus" with the TV1 recording on TV2. Not sure how the OP's 722 is set up, but if Record Plus is on then TV2 could mess up the recordings (especially if the OP didn't realize it was recording on Tuner2). If it is off, then it most likely isn't the cause.

With the 722 (or at least ours) if you hit the DVR button either 3 or 4 times, it will bring up the schedule of recordings. When it does, you can scroll up and it will show what was recorded (and what was not) and that may provide some clues as to what happened and why.

Hope that helps,
Geoff

My 625 did something very similar. It was an already existing timer for The Office, and it had always recorded successfully in the past. Then, one time, it only recorded the final minute of the show. I had no explanation for this, except freaky Dish DVR 625 behavior. That occurred about 4 weeks ago, but hundreds of events have since occurred and no bad recordings.

If this continues, perhaps your should RA.

Ok, thanks, everyone. I spent some time going through all the menu items yesterday, and actually discovered that Record Plus selection, before you wrote about it here. So, I found th culprit, and disabled it.

At least, I think you can either disable it, or change it back to TV1. Yes, it appears to default to TV2.

However, that also sucks immensely. I was watching a football and basketball game last night, when all of sudden the channel changed to AMC, and I figured out it was getting set to DVR Mad Men.

I guess the answer here is to not have things wired the way I do currently. My wife uses what's currently TV2 for the DVR. So, yeah, maybe she was the culprit behind messing up some of my prior recordings. But, TV1 is not going to work, if I can't watch a different channel. So, with a little work, maybe rerouting things is the answer here.

What's to reroute? Sounds like you are better off enabling RP to TV2. That will protect you when watching live on TV1, unless your wife is recording overlapping programs, then one will start on TV1. There are just limitations you are going to have to figure out how to balance.

Throwing something up against the wall here:

If you had set a timer for program A to start at 4:59 and one for program B to start at 5:00 on the same tuner, program A would record 1 minute then program B would start, ending the recording of program A, if B was a higher priority recording.

Interesting stuff. I do not believe enough things were scheduled to allow for conflicts like that. But, it's possible.

KAB......I just figure if TV2 and her changing channels when I'm recording, is the problem, rerouting would be the answer. I could probably do it, without too much of a headache. I.E. Involved rooms on main floor, with an unfinished basement.
