DVD player very quiet through TV

I have a Samsung HLT5076S 50" 1080p DLP TV with a E* 622 and an RCA upconverting DVD recorder hooked to it both with HDMI. The sound on the 622 is fine, but the sound on the DVD player is really quiet. We had some people over last night to watch a movie and I turned the TV as loud as it would go, to 100, and it still was not very loud. Normally, on the satellite I have the volume around 12-15. Could this be a bad HDMI cable or something with the DVD player?

Could it be volume loss in the downmix from 5.1 to stereo since I don't have a surround sound? That is the only thing I can think of. Maybe when I get home tonight I can adjust the sound settings to stereo instead of 5.1.
