Dolby PC Entertainment Experience Program Gains Broad Industry Support
Dolby brings surround sound technologies to PCs, motherboards, audio codecs, and software at ICES 2006
Las Vegas, January 5, 2006—Dolby Laboratories (NYSE: DLB) announced today at the 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show that its Dolby® PC Entertainment Experience licensing program continues to gain support across the PC industry. This includes leading OEMs, motherboard manufacturers, independent hardware vendors, and independent software vendors. As a testament to the strength and value of its technology, Dolby worked with key PC industry suppliers to enable an advanced and comprehensive set of surround sound capabilities to be integrated into next-generation PC platforms designed for the digital home.
"The entertainment PC category, which is beginning to take off, is generating products that will capture the consumer's imagination and make their way into mainstream living rooms over the next several years," said Roger Kay, President of the market research firm Endpoint Technologies.
Dolby Technologies in Notebooks and Desktop PCs
At ICES, Dolby announced three new notebook PCs with Dolby Home TheaterTM and two new ePCs with Dolby Master Studio™ solutions. The next-generation Toshiba QosmioTM, the MSI S425, and AsusTek WJ2 notebooks will offer listeners home theater surround sound with the flexibility to tailor the listening experience to fit their media, mood, audience, and environment. The Integra Integrated Media Center and the Ace Computers LHS IIHD Limited Media Server, which is based on an Intel® motherboard, were also just unveiled and feature Dolby Master Studio. These are the industry's first two Intel Viiv™ technology-based systems to feature Dolby Master Studio solutions.
PCs already announced under the Dolby PC Entertainment Experience licensing program include the Velocity MicroTM ProMagixTM MSX desktop PC that features Dolby Master Studio and the Lenovo® Novo Center PC that features Dolby Home Theater, which is specifically targeted at the growing domestic China PC market. Both of these systems were announced in Q4 2005.
Dolby Technologies in PC Motherboards
Intel unveiled three new motherboards—the Intel D945GPM, D945GBO, and D975XBX—all approved for the Dolby PC Entertainment Experience. The Intel D945GPM and D945GBO meet the Designed for Dolby Home Theater requirements, while the Intel D975XBX supports the Designed for Dolby Master Studio requirements. PCs built with these Intel motherboards can deliver a true Dolby surround sound experience from any stereo or multichannel audio source in any playback environment— such as a surround sound system, two speakers, or any pair of headphones. In addition, AsusTek's new P5WD2-E motherboard supports the Designed for Dolby Master Studio requirement. These offerings join the retail motherboards Dolby has already announced from Abit, AsusTek, Gigabyte, and MSI. The motherboards developed in conjunction with the Dolby PC Entertainment Experience make it easy for consumers to select the audio features that best suit their surround sound needs.
Dolby and PC Audio Codec Suppliers
Designed to provide additional PC system audio value, Dolby has also approved a lineup of audio codecs from some of the industry's key suppliers. C-Media, Realtek, and SigmaTel are providing Intel High Definition Audio codecs to enable PC and motherboard manufacturers with the Dolby audio capabilities to bring entertainment to life from stereo or multichannel audio sources or virtually any playback environment. From mainstream to high-end PCs, these codecs offer flexible audio solutions for PC users.
Dolby Technologies in Software
Software DVD player providers CyberLink, InterVideo, and Nero have rallied around the Dolby PC Entertainment Experience. These software providers have created special versions of their software DVD player applications for OEMs designed specifically to support the Dolby PC Entertainment Experience. By meeting Dolby's requirements, the DVD software players integrate well with the other elements of the Dolby PC Entertainment Experience to provide a seamless audio experience.
"This year's CES marks a significant and exciting time for Dolby's PC Entertainment Experience initiative," said Greg Rodehau, Director, PC Business Unit, Dolby Laboratories. "Dolby has been working closely with the PC industry to bring the highest quality surround sound audio to PC enthusiasts. With Dolby technologies, music, movies, games, and TV can be brought to life in a truly enriching and realistic playback environment."
