This move is a small insurance policy on Brad Penny who's on the 15 day DL right now. Maddux will be the Dodgers #4 starter till he gets back.

Because 2 NL Central teams will make post season this year, if the Cubs and the Dodgers win their divisions they would play each other in the NLDS.

The NL East winner would face the wildcard team MIL (or STL) in the other NLDS.
