I have a western digital unit that I want to connect to my 722, but I have very limited space. I was thinking about laying the unit on top of the 722. Will it function properly? Will it cause any problem for the 722?

Technically you can but sitting on top of the 722 may add some heat to your external drive. Put some rubber spacers on the drive case to give it some breathing room.

thanks, and I have another question.......is it possible to record straight to the external drive or does it have to be transferred from the dvr?

Using a 722 it has to be transferred from the 722. So in other words recorded to the 722 and then transferred to the EHD.

The EHD on the 622 and 722 is just an archive, you can't record directly to it.

On the 211, the EHD becomes the "internal" HD for a DVR and is recorded to directly.

211 freezing browse guide and DVR'ed shows losing audio
