Dish's Ergen considers bid for T-Mobile if Sprint deal fails

I think in regard to Mr. Ergen, all is at least considered in regard to deals and such

Lets see if Charlie can pull this off. It is the only game left in town. I hope he really thinks about this. This is the time to either merge and or buy T-Mobile or sell off the spectrum. The FCC deadline is fast coming down the line. I would love it if my cell phone provider could be part of DISH and we could get more discounts.

Dish Q2 earnings are out today and a conference call is scheduled for 12:00 EST. It will be interesting to see if this is mentioned.

Dish has been pretty quite on the wireless front lately. I wonder if they would actually consider buying/merging with T-Mobile.

Not sure what I fear more... A Sprint merger or a Dish merger... Either one is bad news in my opinion...

EDIT: Just noticed Sprint gave up on the merger... We'll see what Dish does now.

Has anyone noticed a pattern with Charlie and buyouts? If the parties agree, the federal govt gets in his way. Or the parties can never agree.

Heard during the Dish Networks earnings call

Dish Networks (DISH +1.9%) CEO Charlie Ergen concedes during the firm's earnings call that the pay-TV business appears to be in a secular decline.
Over-the-top offerings at a lower price point could be the future, he notes.
Ergen is more excited about wireless. He says there's plenty of potential for the company to benefit by partnering with Sprint. A bid for T-Mobile by Dish is described as a "maybe" by the exec.
Another interesting comment is his contention that a merger of Dish and DirecTV wouldn't makes sense for Dish shareholders due to valuation.

I know what Charlie is trying to do and he knows that the major isp's will not allow him to stream Dish programming over their networks, unless he is willing to pay them directly like what net flix had to do.

My only concerns are if He does buy T-mobile will he keep their CEO? Will a discount be offered if you have Dish and T-mobile? Or will prices get jacked up? I am thinking of switching to T-mobile. Tired of Verizon.

If your life takes you any place outside of a urban area forget about t-mobile working.

Wonder if all his spectrum would help at all with that.

Darn good question. I think the spectrum is needed to use it in different ways, such as one-to-many streaming of video. Plus it's always good to have more. ;)

The only contribution I can make to the T-Mobile coverage discussion is the news reporting of the tech, which stated two things of interest. (1) Dish already had rights to rooftops and (2) they propose to use what I call "flood routing". This means that you don't even need to string fiber to cell towers, because the data can take multiple paths through many active sites (on customer premises?) and still make it through. Given flood routing like that, I can imagine wiring up rural areas would be both easier, cheaper, and faster.

I think it would be a great idea if Dish and Direct offered their own cell phone network through a mesh network using existing satellite dishes that they have installed. I have wondered why cable/dsl have not offered such a service themselves.
