Just saw this....

70 National HD Channels? Since when

Are they counting 40 HD PPV and National RSN channels?

'More on the way?' I notice they don't say when...

yep it's all B.S. and they are getting away with it. Just lile HD channels like TBS that says their movie is in HD when it's nothing more than just stretched SD.

I'm not sure they're getting away with it - I haven't seen anyone that believes the claims they are making. I do see people upset they they aren't giving what they are advertising though.

I would love to get into Charlie Chat Monday and ask Charlie how he counts. Something tells me I would not get too far.

Its no more of a lie than the 100 channels of HD that DirecTV advertised for what, TWO YEARS?

Yes, I know, they have added a lot of channels.

BUT Dish is playing a marketing game. I don't like it, but its just a marketing thing.

I say, give it a break. There are more important things to worry about.

They advertised CAPACITY for up to 150 national HD channels for those two years, not that they had 100 channels, you E* keep forgetting that.

The math that DIRECTV uses to count their HD channels isn't any better than DISH. So until both providers agree on a fair way to count their HD channels we will continue to see these inflated numbers!

Neither one of them will count them the correct way for fear that they will loose customers to the other due to false advertising!

Since we are on the subject of "Capacity" thats totally different than what a provider actually carries.

The problem with Capacity is making people think for 2 years you have something you don't actually have. If they wanted to advertise it the correct way they could have said.... "We will have the capacity for 150 HD channels by the end of the year, we don't have these HD channels today but we may get them by the end of the year while our competitor DISH Network has the channels we are promising today"

Pardon me, but thats a load of crap. Those ads were completely deceptive.

I didn't forget anything; I saw hundreds of those commercials.

I think Dish and Direct use the same marketing person so they can both save money.:D

Guess this should be going to the war zone. If you took the wording that they used saying capacity then that's your problem, they weren't deceptive. Maybe that's the difference between D* and E* subs;)

Well perhaps if they did include capacity it was really really small ;)

No need for the warzone, yet. :D

thats what they said by using the word capacity. If im not mistaken they said "we will soon have the capacity for..."
How is that any different that what you said?
And E* didnt and still doesnt have the majority of the channels they were promising. So that wouldnt have been any better

"When all else fails.... manipulate the data!"

Marketing is marketing. It's BS on both sides of this fence. I'm an E* sub. Right now D* has a few more HD channels... a couple of which I might actually watch once a month or less.

Just this weekend D* had what I think was a full page ad in the paper. Telling people to ditch E* because D* has the locals in HD. What they DON'T say in their ad is that they don't even have all the national network locals in HD. They don't have CBS. That's kind of a biggie.

So often it's not what they SAY, but rather what they DON'T say that's deceiving. Like a great magic act it's about misdirection and deception. Getting you to believe something.

E* and D* are really no different than 99% of the other advertisers out there. MOST of the people on this message board seem pretty smart. So I guess I'm kinda surprised when a marketing discussion gets this much attention.

GREAT! .... now *I've* posted in in it... thanks a lot.

:D

Just curious, does E* offer any locals in your area?

E* has the locals but not in HD. D* has a few of the locals in HD but probably just over half of what's available. Certainly not all of them. We're one of those DMAs that was promised HD locals I think in 2006 and never got them.

Doesn't matter. If E* finally lights up HD locals for our DMA I have every reason to believe that THEY won't have CBS either. So I'll still have my antenna for OTA. I think the local CBS affiliate is a hold out.

Well in that case, i see the point of the ad. There was nothing misleading about it.

Edit: Saw the info i was questioning.
