Ok this is the story. Let me say up front i am a Directv customer and have been for 6 years. My parents have been with dish FOR 14 years. Yesterday they asked what it would cost to get a upgrade to HD . So i called dish for them and used there last name. Now let me say he has a duel DVR and a plain receiver. This is what Dish said after 14 years. He needed the upgrade only for the DVR We will give you a FREE HD receiver not a DVR WITH A NEW 2 YEAR CONTRACT :rolleyes:And you need to have someone come out to change the dish for $95.And upgrade to HD $10 more a month. So i let them know i could go to Directv for FREE. A new HD DVR and a new HD receiver. Plus $29.00 OFF my monthly bill for a year no $95.00 install plus $100 off for me and another $100 for them:rolleyes:.The only new cost after a year would be the $5 a month receiver charge. Now let me say this before all of you Dish supporters get your pants in mess:p. I called Directv about a 2 month ago on the price of the MLB PACK and they cut the price to keep me happy. After talking for a hour and going threw 3 CSR Not one penny of a cut:rant: Not one penny after 14 years. So i know why Directv is NUMBER ONE IN CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. As my parents now say WE ARE A DIRECTV CUSTOMER:).

Hey fanboy, this is a common complaint for existing customers of BOTH Dish and Direct. Both companies give new customers enticing incentives to sign up, but once you're in as an existing customer, then you're no longer their "best buddy" and they Both expect you to pay full price for anything new or extra.

Maybe you missed his first line, "...Ok this is the story. Let me say up front i am a Directv customer and have been for 6 years. My parents have been with dish FOR 14 years."

It appears as both of them are established customers. I can't say that this happens to everyone when the speak to either a DirecTV CSR and/or a Dish CSR, but this appears to be what happened in this case.

I also wouldn't necessarily call him a "fanboy" either. ;) He covered his butt on that one..."I called Directv about a 2 month ago on the price of the MLB PACK and they cut the price to keep me happy..."

Upgrades are offered depending on the customer. Judging from the offer they got it sounds like they were not paying much to DISH and DISH felt it would take too long to recoup the costs of the HDDVR to them so one was not offered.

DIRECTV does the same thing.

It's a business not a charity.

I now am a Dish customer after more then ten years as a DirectTv customer. Swap the Dish and Direct in your story and it would be mine. For the price of one free upgrade to a HD DVR Direct lost me! After I changed to Dish they started the offers... so far the best is "Free DVRs for three TVs and free service for three months! If they had been willing to wave the $200 fee for the DVR and upgrade my dish I would still be a happy Direct customer.

Miss understood

It is not about the money. They sell out $78.00 a month. It is about Dish not carrying. They did not even try to keep them:confused:.All they said if you sign up for the warranty it would cost only $15.00 to have the dish change out. They should have said.Since you have been with us for 14 years and payed your bill on time in order to keep you as a GREAT CUSTOMER we will take off $10.00 on your bill for the next six months. You see $60 is not alot of money it is the meaning of showing you care. The same way Directv showed they care about me on the MLB pack. Some times you have to give a little to get a little. And please do not tell me that Directv and DISH have the same problem. From what i seen and heard Directv is doing a better job on keeping customers.

It costs you $40 when you take that warranty out since they now charge a $25 downgrade fee for removing it.

Dish Network in the past year or two started offering customers more than they used to in order to keep the customers (Free three months of HBO/Showtime, Cinemax for a year for a penny, $10 off per month for a year - with a two year commitment).

Some customers get better treatment than others in both cases though. It depends on the deals going on at that time and who you speak with and the situation.

I'll be surprised if Dish doesn't call your parents and beg to get them back. Same thing happened to me, I wanted an HD DVR upgrade and they wanted an arm and a leg for it, plus the new dish install (this was 7 years ago). I cancelled and went to DirecTV. The next day I got a call from Dish. They wanted me back, said they would give me everything for free. To late, already had DirecTV installed......

Does Dish still have the "Winback" dept? It's been a few years but when I wanted to upgrade to a 722 from a broken 622 they wanted to charge me extra for the 722. Threatened to leave and I asked for Winback. Problem solved in 5 minutes, no extra charge for the 722.

Not necessarily true at all. I have received many a free things, including 2 free HD DVR upgrades, reduced prices, and free packages from Direct quite often. I have been a Direct customer for about 10 years.

Problem is that does not matter if you a dish or a directv customer you are rated as a customer and depending on that rating is if you get any breaks. for what ever reason . Dish felt his parents werent wroth the save which is just bad policy. If a directv retentions/winback agent did that more then once ( not try and save the customer ) they are fired . This is per a policy we got effective may 1 .

After 14 years with DISH see how happy your parents are with D* HR2X DVRs after 2 months of usage? Remember they still have 22 more months with the equipment you sold them on switching to.

Well, I dunno about upgrades, In the area where I live 90% of the ppl have satellite. Many of my family/friends/co-workers have either DirecTV or Dish.

A co-worker switched to dish 2-3 years back after being with DirecTV from the beginning, because Dish gave him a better upgrade deal. Now DirecTV sends him a letter wanting him back with free HD DVR install, etc. Even offering to pay off his contract with dish if he was still under one, for some it seems to be about who has the better deal, some ppl have no problem switching back and forth to get new & improved equipment, etc.

Some of my family/friends/co-workers have gotten free HD upgrades like myself, while others have had to pay something, I've given up trying to understand how the sat companies determine this .

I will say this, the Dish audit calls have really hurt them here, ppl do not like being called, bothered, and run room to room on the phone getting info from receivers . They just want to pay their bill and watch TV with no hassle. More ppl here have converted to DirecTV than to Dish.

My HR22-100 has been going good for over 7 months now, no problems.
