Dish VIP722 and Cable tv

Can you use a 722 and have cable? Yes.

Can you use a 722 to pass through or record any channels (HD or SD) from cable? No.

The 722 does not have a QAM tuner in it nor does it pass through a cable or antenna signal.

QAM is to HD and digital TV what "Cable Ready" is to standard TV. Very, very few cable systems just pass through the broadcast signal. They encode it and compress it with QAM.

I know that at the retail stores' salespeople selling HD TVs are totally ignorant to the fact that QAM is required for the TV to be able to get HD channels from a direct cable connection (no cable box required for local channels or other "open" channels") . I have bought 3 HD TV sets in the last 20 months and EVERY time (3 stores each) I go to the store I have to educate the salesperson as to why QAM is important! I am not exaggerating here... every time.

Anyway, that is why the 722's OTA tuner will not work with cable. It has not QAM capability.
