here's a weird one.....we all know the card swap Dish did earlier this year, right?

Well my dad calls me yesterday and said he "got something from dish. Something about changing a card. Next time you're over, come and fix it"

So I check it out. He gets the "card swap" letter and one card (he has three receivers)

Check the one in the living room...check (yellow card)
Check the one in the bedroom...nope thats the one to change

Here's the weird part. The card he got is yellow with a big "Dish500" on it. The one I am replacing is yellow and has a Dish500 logo and the different movie channel logos on it

Weird part II...the recever in the living room has the same type of card and the sheet says "updated card"

whatupwitdat?

nope

just a 301....he has 3 of them

all have yellow cards
2 have the "new card" (that say Dish500)
1 has the older yellow card (and still does)

shaggy
they did this starting last year...because I've done this on oh about 10 receivers between mine and the relatives (all the relatives make me do it for them) :)

This late summer (July/August) they were completed (so we thought)

I read earlier this year on the forums that they figured out one of the earliest yellow cards, if I am not mistaken.

I have helped a lot of people change out to the yellow card but have not heard of this yet.

Oh btw...congrats Iceberg on satguy of the year.

Iceberg, go onto the System Info screen and check what it says next to your smartcard number.

You'll see either ROM101, 102, 103 or S01.

They are swapping out Rom101 cards to newer cards, rom102 or higher. There was a major bug in the 101 cards that allowed a compromise.

101 was compromised a few months ago. Of course 102 was compromised a few weeks ago, so maybe they'll come up with a NEW card to swap everyone to. What a waste...

Dish, its your chance to go with a new card for the MPEG-4 receivers. I am guessing that they will have a newer version of the Dish500 card for those MPEG-4 receivers. What a shame that they have already got a few of the yellow cards figured out although they have been out for a while. Its just a matter of time. I think they will figure it out within a few years on the DirecTv cards.

it probably is one of the older yellow cards. I know there are 2 types of yellow ones
-the ones that say Dish500 and have all the premium movie logos on it (HBO, Showtime, Flix, etc)
-the ones that just say "Dish500"

The one I replaced has the old logos on it.....I have the same one at home so they'll probably be sending me a new one yet again (I just upgraded from the blue card earlier this year...then that receiver blew up so I used an older 301)

what sucks is I did the auto activation thing and an hour later...nothing
a "your receiver is not authorized yet" screen

so I had to call Dish...thank god the technical guy was easy to work with...5 minutes and we were up and running....

Thats better than the ordeal I went through upgrading an older receiver from blue to yellow. Took a week before they would admit the new card got "lost in the mail" (or they never sent it). Then a week more for the SECOND card to come. Then when it showed up, it came by itself with no documentation. So I call the normal 333dish number, lady has NO clue about smartcards, says call another number. Next dude is like "do the auto activation". So I call the auto number. It asks for the PIN that was sent with the cards. haha, remember no docs came with the card. Call other number back, guy tries to pull the auto activation crap again. Finally get transfered to some place else. Guy activates smartcard. WHEW.

Sorry for the rant :)

Unfortunately, Echostar is partners with Kudleski (the guys that do the encryption) in their joint venture NagraStar. Check out their awesome website: http://www.nagrastar.com/

Thus they are locked into this system it seems.

no kidding, guess who'll eventually foot the bill for this waste?

You know, IMHO, (consider this a rant) Dish is doing really nothing but wasting their time and money in swapping out all these cards... I understand the blue card deal because piracy was EXTREMELY widespread... but if they are going to replace card after card... they are going to go broke... I remember back in the day when I was installing C-Band dishes, they came out with the NEW VideoCipher units... before we even got them in to install in the boxes there were tractor trailer loads of the Black Ciphers already on the market... No matter what E* or D* does card wise there is always going to be some teenage geek somewhere in the world that will figure out how to hack into it or around it sometimes before it even hits the streets. What I figure if they are spending (random figure) 10 million dollars to combat 5 million dollars in bootleg subscriptions, then what have they succeded in doing? Throwing money in the toilet... There needs to be something developed that will work around the piracy and make it easy for the user and harder for the bootlegger... There has been many ideas floating around the forums... my favorites are tying the recievers to caller id or using some sort of GPS device to tie the recievers to an account... but who knows???

The whole point of the smart cards was to make it easy to upgrade. Neither company should have left compromised cards in service as long as they did. If the original yellow has been hacked then its a good thing that they are swapping them out. If they keep doing it they shouldn't have to do any more massive swaps.

The same happened to me!!

I bought a 721 from Ebay, blue card, I was sent a Yellow card via UPS...arrived 3 days later. 2 weeks later, I received one of those yellow cards without the channel logos on it via mail. I called and asked if they wanted t me to change it, but the girl said that they must have messed up! I sent the second yellow card back.
