We cancelled dish in January after ~10 years. We were skeptical at first, but are very happy we did.

We had a 722 and a 211k (still do) that worked flawlessly. We set the parents up with our old 301 on the welcome pack + encore.

they have been very happy with it, even with the price increases. however, this past monday, mom and dad were watching tv and most of their channels went out. they did the usual power reset and such, but nothing worked.

since we were unavailable, dad called DN to find out what was going on. the lady told him his receiver is no longer supported, and they would have to send him a new one. She then asked for a CC to charge them $17 to send the new one out, and explained him that this new one will be leased and if they ever cancel, they will have to send it back.

had we been available, we simply would have added the 211k to their account (which was the plan), but we were also waiting for them to get a notice from dish about the receiver.

WTF is dish thinking?? NO notice, cuts their programming, and then charges them to send out the equipment needed to restore their programming. Oh, and they are not going to get any credits for these days they are without programming either.

Parents are conflicted about staying with them now.

Don't know what has happened. Dish used to be solid.

With so many customers to notify, some will inevitably fall they the cracks.

Not too late for the ViP211. Talk to DIRT about that and the fees, and surely they can credit the lost days.

It also could have been your parents passed over or did not understand a notification. Dish has been doing a fairly good campaign for some time about the change.

I thought if the receiver was owned, the customer was given the replacement free and clear ? If the old receiver was leased, it's replaced by another leased receiver.

It has been well advertised about the change over, even trying to do it in segments to help everyone throughout the country. As far as the leased receiver, yes. They can keep their 301 but it will not work anymore but to continue service they can buy a new one(your 211) or dish will send them a leased receiver. I would recommend PMing Dirt to check on the fees, but as far as the channels disappearing, considering dish has been trying to notify for 2 years with this and started issues to occur to have you call in to replace for 2 years... A twos credit may or may not be warranted. It all just depends on what was going on exactly. There is still lots of information not given.

Hmmm, it's very possible that empiretc actually received those notices while he was still using them or even rec'd them after cancelling but paid them no attention since he didn't have service....

Honestly that was one of my first thoughts.

With so many posts over the last few months from people asking about this notice, it is apparent DISH is notifying people. Sure they may miss some but more likely the notice was unintentionally not read.
What I many not be understanding is why can't the 211 still be used instead of one sent by DISH?

I would be griping to DISH about the $17 charge for shipping since it is they that are requiring me to make a change, owning or not owning my equipment having no bearing.

They mae
I wonder how many customers dish will loose over this ?

Funny how they charge this customer to ship a receiver but insist on going to other customers homes and Sending out a technician
Well lets see they make $17.00 to ship a receiver out and they charge $95.00 to send a tech out. Either way they are making money off of the subs.

I doubt they're making much if anything on those particular services. Have you shipped anything lately, or have you tried running a business and providing trucks and home service? Just because there's a charge doesn't mean there's any profit there.

It looks like they'll send a receiver if the customer doesn't need an arc change. If an arc change is needed then so is a tech.

I would say dish is not profiting on 17.00. I do ebay a lot and shipping is not cheap these days especially with insurance.

I would have probably just got on ebay and bought a cheaper used receiver with a clear ID number. That's what I did. I don't do leased boxes or contracts with any of these companies. I am a prepay flex tv customer. I also do prepaid smart phones with my wireless providers. I will not enter into a two year agreement with any of these companies. It is either prepay or no play. I have excellent credit and income. They market the prepaid to illegals and low credit score people but I like the option of dropping service on a whim if I get jerked around.

I would have to think the receivers that need to be replaced display some kind of nag telling customers they need to be replaced as they do with a card swap???

They are profiting.

With the number of boxes they ship, they make ups or fedex give them a big discount.

My guess is that the $17 they collect from some customers pays for the customers they don't charge shipping to.

I would guess it costs dish between $7-$11 to ship s receiver to a customer.

I'm guessing no one believes or trusts most anything you say or think around here anymore...

sort of
When my dad had his 2 301's swapped out he had 2 options
-buy them
-get them "leased" for nothing. The only thing is he has to return them when he cancels

So on his account it shows the 625 & 322 as owned and 2 311's as leased

did Dish change recording "new and reruns" behavior lately?
