Dish/Receiver compatability question

Hey guys, I'm trying to get a satellite system set up for this fall at our tailgates. I currently have a H20-100 and a Slimline KA/KU dish. I am having an incredibly difficult time getting a signal. I have heard that the older (non-slimline) dishes are much easier to get a signal. Is this true? I also have a DSA-18S that I can use, is this model compatible with my receiver? I am completely inexperienced with all of this so thanks for any help!

If your target 101W sat only, then almost any old 18" dish with one LNBF will work for you.
