SHELBY — The number of qualified applicants may be a determining factor in whether a satellite television company offering close to 600 jobs comes to Cleveland County, according to the Cleveland County Chamber.

If you want to fill one of these jobs, the place to be Oct. 4 is Cleveland Community College from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Chamber officials said in a news conference Tuesday.

That’s where EchoStar Communications Corp. will conduct a career expo to fill customer service positions for its DISH Network satellite TV service. Applicants will visit several stations to learn more about the company and for the company to learn more about them.

“We want to look candidates in the eye and walk away from this event with confidence in the available workforce,” said EchoStar’s Nathan Omansky, regional director for DISH Network in a news release. “We would love to be able to come away from the job fair with the sense that ‘this is the place’ to locate our new facility.”

EchoStar, which is based in Englewood, Colo., provides Direct Broadcast Satellite television products and services to customers worldwide. DISH Network is EchoStar’s brand name.

EchoStar began looking at 140 communities for its customer service center, according to Scott Darnell, the Chamber’s senior vice president of economic development.

Now, it’s considering Cleveland County and two communities in Texas as sites for the center.

If it does build here, it’s expected to open the third quarter of 2006.

Salaries will range from $8.50 to $11.50 per hour, said Niki Bliss-Carroll, vice president of marketing/communications for the Chamber.

Full-time employees may be eligible for free satellite TV system and service, medical, dental and vision plans, tuition reimbursement, and career advancement opportunities, according to the Chamber. They could also receive paid training, 401(k) with matching contributions, profit sharing, flex spending accounts, employee stock purchase plans and employee referral plan.

The Chamber hopes to attract 1,200 to 1,500 applicants, said Economic Development Project Manager Misti Humphries.

EchoStar is a Fortune 500 company, with approximately 20,000 employees.

If the company decided on Cleveland County, it will apply for incentives, said Chamber President Stuart Gilbert.

How to apply

The Career Expo being held by EchoStar Communications will be Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m., at Cleveland Community College. Here is what you need to know about applying:

- Applicants must have a high school diploma, GED or equivalent and be 18 years of age at the time the business locates.

- Job seekers can submit applications and possibly be interviewed for customer service positions.

- If you’re applying, plan to spend about two hours for the application and interview.

- Parking is in the student parking lot. Enter Cleveland Community College from the student and visitor entrance.

- About 100 management positions could be available in information technology, accounting, managers, coaches, human resources, trainers, etc. Those applicants should submit a resume to careerexposnc@echostar.com. Someone from the company will contact those applicants directly to schedule an interview.

- Others should pre-register for an interview time by calling the Chamber at (704) 487-8521, ext. 23. Otherwise, they will have to wait until there is time available.
