Dish and Another RSN Dispute (Altitude)

If regional sports networks are something going away on DISH this is going to break the model - and me. I get it that the costs are too high - but this is the stuff I watch. Subscribing to DISH and then also Hulu does not really solve any of this. Having two services? Plus Hulu is great and all, but the bandwidth use is huge and we have data caps, so that solution does not really exist.

I probably watch 9 channels....4 locals plus ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU/FS1/PAC12 plus RSNs. Once in awhile something else...

If DISH wants to save money rid yourself of all these stupid Viacom channels...no value added whatsoever.....get out of all these sensationalic news channels.

This model is broken, but I do not get what I want, I am out. Not going to pay for stuff I do not watch.

I remember the days when RSNs were premium on cable and basic on satellite. As the original post stated, seeing that this is a Colorado based RSN, I thought I'd never see the day it was dropped. I think Altitude thinks they have the advantage as they carry both the Avalanche and Nuggets, and AT&T Rocky Mountain has only the Rockies. But, you can't have an advantage when you pull your content off the top three providers.

The issue with your statement isn't whether I personally agree with you or not. I do agree with you about some of the programming on satellite/cable. The issue with your statement is that you speak for everyone, and we all have different viewing habits. So, while you and I who see no value in the news channels or MTV suite (heck dump CMT, as its geared toward an entire genre of music that I personally don't like), pleanty of others see no value in the sports channels.

Those people see value in news channels or CMT/MTV. And you said it already, sports cost a whole lot to carry. Dish wants to maximize profit and appeal to as much viewers as possible. Paying more for sports while driving away customers due to removal of other channels is a bad business model. Instead, drop sports and appeal to the mass who doesn't like sports, and whose channels viewed cost less to carry.

That will never happen. The price point would likely be around $10-$12, nobody would pay for it and the RSN would likely loose money.
That's the point. Stop subsidizing the over-priced content and see if people really do want a product they have to pay for, instead of having everyone chip in. Then maybe the sports channels and leagues will realize that their business model is out of control.

That's what I do with the Regional Sports Pack. Only pay for it when I want to. If the price of the pack doubled I wouldn't care, as the fraction of time per month I spend watching the channel would still be less than $5/month.

With Hulu do you get just your regional network or the whole package. I have lost 15 channels that I watch college sports .

Dish is really putting their foot down with these RSN's. It's been said before, but I do believe that they are trying to get the RSN's as add-ons. And I would be shocked at this point if they come back unless they are as add-ons, or they allow a "plus" version of every package (AT200 has no RSN's while AT200+ does, just like the top 120 setup)
I already pay $13 for the Multi-Sports Package. Why not just take the RSNs away form all other packages and put it in the Multi-Sport Package and charge the sports fan for them.

That's probably what Dish wants to do, but Disney isn't going for it. That's probably the entire crux of the dispute.

I just realized I'm not in the Fox/Disney RSNs thread, but my point still stands.

Because the RSNs want $6 a customer across the board. Putting it in the sportspack gives them only a small fraction of customers.

This is what DISH is going for....Disney and other operators do not want this. Will they meet in the middle? Maybe. Or maybe this is satellite's final call.

College games are hardly ever blacked out. That is what the multi sport pack is used for. I'm getting tired of correcting you. Quit posting misleading info for others. Maybe you should become a Dish rep. :)

Do not misunderstand. It's not just about Altitude. It's about DISH's overall view on regional sports channels lately. If competitors have the channel, and DISH does not, it puts us at a major disadvantage. I get what DISH is trying to do - break the model where RSNs are tied to low tier packages, and costs are spread across ALL subscribers, even when they do not want it. Get it. That's wrong.

But I watch 9 channels, period. I also have to pay for all the BS I do not want - that drives my bill up just the same. Talking about the BS Viacom channels (they really are trash across the board) , all the 'news' channels, and the kids channels. If we're going ala carte, then all should be ala carte.

DISH is trying to break the sports model - I get it. But long term if DISH is abandoning the regional sports model then it will lose me as a customer. Someone else may enjoy it - want it this way, etc. And good for DISH. But not good for me.

So DISH is going to have to figure this all out soon because these disputes can't go on forever. It's unfair to the customer who signed up in good faith. I have no contracts and I will not enter into a contract with DISH until and unless this stuff gets straightened out. My internet contract is up in October, and it may be natural to just go back to cable. They'll cut me a heck of a deal (for 2 years).

DISH did just install - for free - an outdoor antenna for me - to beat the problems on the locals. I appreciate it, but we need an end game strategy here. All these work arounds are just another thing.

I do not see streaming as a viable option yet, because of the bandwidth use. But I guess even with the extra $50 Comcast wants to charge me for unlimited - any of the providers still come in less than my DISH bill if I do the streaming option. And on many of these I get my RSNs.

So DISH needs to act fast...something need to change, or I will be forced to go. 9 channels Jessica, 9 channels. And if I can't get those 9 channels, someone else will give them to me.

We absolutely get how important the programming is to many of our members. We are still in negotiations with Altitude, working to not only reach an agreement, but, a long-term agreement for our members.

I'm beyond tired of the paying for RSN's I do not watch. DISH should keep on track of trying to pry them from the packages as they have with locals.

We definitely understand your frustration, PortlandChris. Switching providers just shows the channel owners that you're willing to pay whatever it takes to get your channels. DISH strives to keep the costs down as much as possible. FOX Regional Sports Networks are asking for an unreasonable price increase, by asking subscribers to pay for channels that they may not receive. Here at DISH, we have made every attempt to extend the contract in an effort to quickly negotiate a fair, long-term deal for our customers, not one that puts customers in the middle again. -- Jake B

I have it, for a extra $15 a month which includes the modem rental and no data caps, well worth it.

Comcast has flat told me that to get around data caps it will be $50 a month, and that's the price on their website too. But I just figured out $50 plus HULU or Youtube is still less than what I pay...so why am I still on DISH? Good question. DISH has the Pac 12....Hulu and Youtube does not. So I can get Sling, it has the Pac 12, but does not have my local RSN. So I go in circles...it's one or the other....and heck, I can probably still save overall by getting SLING for the PAc 12 isolated months.

Maybe it is time to make the switch.

Jessica - take a stand and throw all this Viacom BS off DISH too - that adds to my cost? Why do I have to subscribe to three news channels...which are not really even news channels - and I have to pay that cost as well. There is not one single channel on Viacom I watch, and I believe it's just trash TV.

If you are going to pull some things out of the bundle, pull them all. I watch 9 or or 10 channels. That;s it.....local 4 plus ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU/FS1/PAC 12, and RSN. I guess during NBA season I watch TBS/TNT, but that's it. And one of my RSNs you already refuse to even carry.

DISH is paying the same rate for RSNs as the others...you all have clauses to make sure you paying no more than your competitor is paying. Yeah, I get it that DISH is trying to keep costs down...but Hulu, Vue, etc. didn't get that memo to hold costs down...so no matter what I do it;'s not going to change.

Yeah. price increases suck - but tell Viacom and it's trash to go pound sand....it is really just TRASH and yet I am made to pay for it. Common Jessica, I dare you and DISH to take this stand anbd throw Viacom off of DISH....TRASH tv at its finest is what Viacom represents...yet I have to pay for this crap.

There's a fundamental broken model in pay TV. No doubt. But - here we go. Hulu TV plus $50 extra internet unlimited bandwidth charge is still less than what I pay DISH I just figured out...and look what I get at Hulu and what I get at DISH....no real comparison. Maybe I do need to just leave? Thanks for cluing me into this. (or subsitute YouTube, or substitute Vue). Now the one thing I don't get at those....Pac 12, but I get my RSN.....

So Jessica thanks for cluing me in that it's time to leave DISH. I am paying more for less....hey - how about that? Maybe a new motto for Charlie Ergen and his games...
