Dish 811 DVI to HDMI, Works then stops

Hi,
I have a Philips 32PT9100D 32" HDTV with 1 HDMI input.
I have a dish 811.

I have a DVI to HDMI cable connected from the back of the
811 to the TV. When I unplug and plug my 811 in, I get
a video signal to the television through the HDMI input.

As soon as I shut off the TV and turn it back on, I lose the
signal. It doesn't come back, no matter what I do, unless
I unplug the 811 and plug it back in.

The component connection from the 811 to the TV works
totally fine at all times.

I don't want to use the component connection because I
want to hook up my progressive scan dvd player to it instead.

Do you guys have any idea how to fix this problem and
get the HDMI to work constantly?

I've never heard of that problem before. Maybe someone will chime in and help you out that has heard of this before.
 
Boy,tough one. It could be a bad cable. It could be something with the 811. It could be a problem with your TV not syncing/detecting the signal upon power up. First thing to try is a different cable. You can get decent inexpensive DVI-D to HDMI cables from monoprice.com if you want to try a second one.

Next thing I'd try is a second DVI video source, like a DVD player with a DVI out. Perhaps you could get an overnight loaner from the place where you purchased your TV.

If it acts the same way on both cables, and it works fine with both cables from the DVD player, then its the 811, or the interaction between the 811 & TV. I'd call it into Dish then and see if I could get a swap.

I know it's not the 811 because that's the first thing
I swapped out. They sent me a new one and I had
the same problem.

I guess I should probably try a different cable or source.

I was just kind of hoping someone else had seen this
problem before, and that it was something with 811s
in general. Now it's looking a lot more like a TV or cable
problem.

I remember seeing this sort of problem in my forum searches.

Something to do with HDMI being a 2-way communication
link, while dvi is only one, so when the TV is shut off,
it sends a signal that the dvi doesn't know what to do with.

Again, any help is very much appreciated.
 
The problem is that your TV is expecting some kind of sync signal on the HDMI when it powers up, and that's not coming from the 811 DVI output.
 
Have you tried switching inputs on the TV after you power it up?

Like in connecting the s-video output of the 811 to one of your video inputs, then switching to it and then back again to the HDMI input to see if your TV will see it then. If this works, then at least you wouldn't have to pull the cable out.

Yeah, I've tried to connect it to just about every input
I have, and switch between them to see if I could
somehow give the HDMI a kick in the pants. No
luck.
Now, the problem has gotten even worse. I get no signal
regardless of what I do with the box. I get a flash of white
noise when I power up the receiver now, but never
get a video signal, even if I unplug and replug it in.
So the situation has deteriorated...., and I am having thoughts
that my receiver DVI output on the receiver has gotten messed
up now too.
That last paragraph was in response to HDMI only, all of my
other outputs and inputs still work fine.
It's so damn hard to test these things because the format
is so new, and it's just not so easy to have a lot of spare
test cables or equipment to isolate the problem.
I know for a fact that it's not the cable now, as I picked a
different one up from Best Buy and no change. Gotta go
return it now. :mad:
The only thing I can think of to try before becoming certain
that it's the TV is to try a direct HDMI source, and see if I get
a signal. At this point, I would be happy knowing that it's my
receiver that is causing the problem and not the TV.
I gotta go pick up a damn DVD player outputing HDMI just for
test purposes.
I don't want to have to deal with replacing a TV, but it's looking
more like that.
Hey SimpleSimon, that's exactly what I thought was the problem
initially, but I just haven't encountered too many people with the
same problem, and now that I don't get any signal when I unplug
and replug at all, I'm not at all sure what the problem is period.
 
It doesnt seem to be an issue with grounding, Im leaning towards a failure on the tv. Ive seen similiar issues on crt sets that would go from channel 2 to another channel each time they were turned off and back on, of the 3 that I have seen this on 2 were old and one was maybe a year old.
 
Figured it out, but not happy.

Ok.
I have determined what the problem is by process
of elimination. Thankfully it is not the TV.
I went to best buy and picked up an HDMI outputting
DVD along with an HDMI cable.
With this setup it works fine all the time no matter
what I do.
It clearly does take about 3 or 4 seconds for the signal
to start working if I shut off the TV and turn it back on,
or change the A/V input and return to HDMI, but it does
initialize without me needing to plug in and unplug anything
This leads me to believe what I was beginning to suspect
when I first posted, and what SimpleSimon said.
My TV needs some sort of signal reply from the HDMI
source after initialization. With DVI, it is not getting this
return signal. With HDMI, as evidenced by the DVD
player, it does get this return signal and produces
video.
I guess the only solution I have at this point is to
purchase a DVD player with HDMI out for permanent
use, or get the Dish 942. Either way, in order to connect
two HD devices, I need one of them to be pure HDMI,
and DVI-HDMI conversion does not work.
Well, that sucks, but not as bad as replacing my TV would
have.

Well, I guess since the 211 and 411 are coming out on the 15th, my ability to upgrade should alternatively solve the problem, as both receivers have HDMI out.
So that's good news, plus the 811's SD is pathetically blurry. So a new receiver seems like an all around good idea.
 
My Sony LCD has the same problem.
I can't get a picture (or even sound, using red/white audio cables) when my 811 is set at 1080i and using the HDMI input on my TV.
Using a different input, I can get a picture on the TV and then go into the 811 menu and change to HD settings to 720p.
After the receiver is set to 720p I can get a picture (and sound through red/white cables) with my HDMI input. The only problem is that the picture looks like SD instead of HD. I go back into the menu and switch the HD back to 1080i and get a much better picture, but after I shut my TV off and turn it back on, I'm back to no picture or sound with the 811 set to 1080i and using the HDMI input.
Obviously my Sony can display 1080i and 720p through the HDMI so it's not a TV problem. It's just another one of the joys of owning an 811.
