DIRECTV2PC and VPN adapters

I was receiving the following message when trying to view recorded shows:

DirecTv2Pc cannot connect to the server.
The protected content cannot be played back at this time.

I did have one recording that would play back and that was the HDNet test pattern.

I found this post DirecTv2Pc and ICS Internet Connection Sharing - DBSTalk.Com about VPN adapters causing the issue. I was able to go in and disable the adapter but this is not an ideal solution.

Is there a reason playback is not supported when there is a VPN adapter? I assume this must be a protected content issue of some sort.
