I need help from someone familiar with direcTV receivers.

I have been with dishnetwork for 15 years but am switching to direcTV when my contract expires next month.

With dishnetwork, I currently have a duo-SD receiver 625 and a solo-HD receiver VIP-612. The 625 has TV2 connected via coax to an adjacent room.

How many direcTV receivers do I need to serve 3 tv sets? I am replacing one of the sdtv's with an hdtv, so now I will have 2 hdtv's and 1 sdtv.

Does the HR-24 have 2 outputs and if so can output-1 be to a hdtv and output-2 be to a sdtv with a coax cable? Or will I need 2 hd receivers as well as an sd receiver. Or for the best setup do I need something entirely different.

Thanks in advance for any advice and info anyone can provide.

NONE of the D* recvrs do the Dual tuner thing like DISH did.
The D* DVR recvrs have 2 tuners, so you can Record 2 shows or watch one channel and Record another.

Sounds like you'll want 3 recvrs, unless you want to have the same programming on two different TV's

Thanks Jimbo for your response, but I have a couple of followup questions.

It would be okay if the sdtv and one of the hdtv signals were the same.

The sdtv is in a guest room adjacent to the family room but the guest room is rarely used.

When it is used, the family room hdtv is not being utilized or if it is it would be okay to be a duplicate signal.

So can I use the existing coax that runs from the family room to the guest room? Does the directv receiver have a coax output? Or could I use a modulator? or would I have to make a new run that uses component cables?

Thanks again for your help.

There is NO Coax output.
My suggestion would be to run a Component cable, if you can, others will tell you to go the Modulator route, I've never had much luck with the Modulators, but others have, so it's up to you which ever would work better for you.

Fwiw, all the outputs are hot on these recvrs.

If it were me it is well worth the $5 to just have a 100% separate and totally independent receiver for that extra room. Far more flexibility, usability and better over all PQ

Thanks for everyone's advice. I think I will just spring $5 for the extra receiver.

Remember, if you are doing the Multi-Room DVR, even a regular HD recevier can control another HD-DVR and view it's programming. You can start recording a program that your watching on your regular HD recevier so you can pause, rr, ff, etc.

It's pretty cool!
