DirecTV Inc. is looking at using “DirecTV2Go” portable media players to sell everything from wireless video and voice services to video games and even a global-positioning-system vehicle locator, according to trademark filings obtained by Multichannel News.
DirecTV spokesman Robert Mercer said the trademarks -- issued last week by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office -- refer to the portable media players DirecTV teased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.
News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch and DirecTV CEO Chase Carey have said DirecTV could invest $1 billion this year in a wireless-broadband venture, possibly delivered through emerging WiMax wireless technology.
According to three trademarks issued April 5 and 6, DirecTV is also reserving rights to use the DirecTV2Go brand to market hand-held computers, music, e-mail, interactive “virtual reality” video-game services and electronic newspapers and magazines.
