We want to hook up a DirecTv satellite for our tailgate this year. I have an old SL5PIG-P satellite that was mounted on my old house. Planning on putting this dish on a tripod and hooking it directly to an HD receiver. I have numerous questions and hoping for some help.

1> Do I need anything between the dish and the receiver? There are 4 coax coming from the dish not sure which one to use?

2> We plan on purchasing a DirecTv receiver and adding it to the account. Hoping to find a receiver locally and cheap. I understand I will need to purchase another card and activate a new receiver with DirecTv correct? Are there receiver models that I should avoid?

3> Finding signal. I have only read online about finding HD signal and it sounds difficult. Hoping that my setup will work without major modifications are there any recommendations or tips that I should be aware of? I have found the correct settings for our location. Do any of the iphone apps work (Satellite Pointer)? I expect this to be a major hassle the first go round.

I don't know a thing about hooking up an HD satellite but I have set up a regular DirecTv dish many times. Any help would be tremendous.

I would go with a H/HR 20 and up. These will be "leased", not owned.

You can use any of your feeds from the dish, if your using a dvr, you'll use 2 feeds.
Depending on the revr you choose to use, you'll need a BBC .

As for finding signal, I suggest setting it up in your backyard several times to get the hang of it before going.

You'll want a compass and a tripod.
Being PLUMB is critical to get accurate signal.

Also, there is a TON of info in Many threads dealing with RV/
Camping. set ups, use the "search " you will find much more.

I have been reading lots of other threads. Thanks for the reply.

Can you explain this: "Depending on the revr you choose to use, you'll need a BBC"

That is the dongle that goes on the back of most recvrs before it goes into the recvr connection, it allows the HD signal to be processed.

The H/HR23's have them built in so you don't need them for it.
If you went with a SWM dish set up (Single Wire Multiswitch) you don't need them, other than that, you need them.

But if OP goes SWM he will need a power inserter. He states he has a non-SWM SL5. He should stick with that. Why not just take a receiver from home. They don't know where they are. I highly recommend getting getting a TV4RV.com HD Tripod Combo Kit. Great value and includes all you need for your Slimline dish.
