I currently have DirecTV and subscribe to the family package along with local channels. After seeing Dish Network's new VIP722 HD DVR receiver advertised along with their new free 6 month HD and 3 month HBO/Cinemax promotion including a free HD DVR receiver, I ordered Dish Network today. I will be subscribing to their top 100 package as well as local channels.

Before I call DirectV and cancel service should I possibly consider having both services? DirecTV will probably want me to ship them my two DVR receivers anyway. Does DirecTV offer any programming alone without having a base package? I do like how they have more HD programming than Dish Network and I may want to switch programming between the two as time goes on. If I could subscribe to something costing under $10 a month just to keep DirecTV active that would be awsome.

You can suspend you account for a period of time, you will not be charged during this period. It used to be up to 9 months approximately.

I know its hard for you to pass up the 722ViP offer, but make note of this, DirecTV doesn't offer HD-LITE and it is the HD Leader and this is going to be for a long time.
Echostar does have HD-Lite, and be ready to see your bill sky rocketing since TiVo is suing their A**.
If you have the money sure get both services, but its a total waste of money, PQ on DTV especially the HD content is much much better.
And I dubt you can suscribe to anything under 10$ a month, I think you have to have a minimun package which I believe its around 29.99$+ fees and taxes may apply.
Good luck, I hope you made the right choice.
