Directv 16 Launch Schedule

I've lived through a couple of DTV satellite swap outs and it can be very time consuming for the technical crews involved but usually transparent to the customer as mentioned. Once the satellite is parked and the kick stand is out, new transponders will need to be turned up one at a time with various satellite parameters closely monitored for a time before the uplink center can light up the transponder. Uplink levels and sometimes spacecraft attenuation levels would be adjusted to find the best saturation and operational point and if the spacecraft transponders have ALC or AGC that will have to be disabled for saturation procedures, then turned back on for normal operation. All this requires commands to be sent to the spacecraft, which makes the TT&C folks very nervous as any mistake can be catastrophic.

If all traffic has been shuffled off a particular transponder that is being replaced then all of the above can be performed and traffic can be uplinked to the new transponder in parallel with wherever it was shuffled to and a change in the program guide will then point customers to the new spacecraft and transponder. A lot of people will be very busy during the transition from the company flying the spacecraft to people from DTV engineering, Technical Services, Broadcast Operations, Program Guide, etc. At no time in this process is any programming viewable in the clear as in FTA.

I have never scene a turn over of a satellite. What happens during this time? Do any ch become fta for part of the time? Thank you

T16 started up operations this week, T15 is currently in the process of moving from 101 to 103 and then presumably it will be tested and lit up on the schedule Inclined Orbit stated.

Excerpted from the last FCC license issued for T-15

" Upon receipt of Commission approval, DIRECTV expects to begin drifting T15 to 102.85 W.L. as early as September 16, 2019. The drift is expected to take approximately eight days. During the drift period, DIRECTV will utilize only the satellite’s telemetry, tracking, and command (“TT&C”) frequencies and will follow industry practices for coordinating TT&C transmission during the relocation process. "

Since the move is just a couple degrees, they will be using the preexisting earth station licensed for T-15 to control the movement so there should be no special temporary earth station licenses for movement.

Has been on the move and should be on station next Wednesday (9/25)

Any takers you know of at $489? A business? A farm? Drug dealer?

T15 is on station but the two ground stations that will use it are having some equipment trouble this week. I was told T15 is supposed to be on air to customers late October to early November but an opinion is it will probably be late November before we receive any programs from it.

Well I guess there's no real hurry ...

Considering that the channels in test mode on T15 tps. 1-7 of 103(ca) are for the transfer of the A3 format Spanish and international channels currently on the Reverse Band at 99(cr). And on tp. 8 the A3 local channels currently on a single spotbeam to Puerto Rico from SW-2 tp. 6 at 99W.

All this then will just help accelerate the time table to shutdown of the 7 national tps. on T7S at 119W and to ("once again") turn-off SW-2 at 99W entirely.
