DirecPC equipment for other uses?

A friend gave me 2 Hughes DirecPC satellite receivers and a One Touch Site Commander he found on a computer junk pile. The receivers resemble DVB boxes and the other unit looks like a computer.

Perhaps I just found my computer for my PC card project for DVB S2 and PVR ?

Can the satellite receivers be reprogrammed for other uses?

What is a Site commander? Guess I could try google but never heard of that.
I had Direcway (th 2way system from hughes) about 3 yrs ago, there wasn't any receiver, just a couple of boxes that stacked, rec/transmit modems, other than the lnbf I guess the software they loaded did all the rest.
