Again, a few of one model is slow.
This is seriously getting old.
Sorry Dodger but it is more than a few models. I have two HR20's and they are slow IMO. Are they so bad that I hate them, NO. They are just slower than the Dish 622 and 722.

To me that's a con because you're paying for old technology. I don't watch SD anymore unless I'm forced to....the TV2 option is coaxial SD....unless something has changed since I left Dish.
Every HR20 I have seen, including mine, is not slow at all (some CE's do slow them down). In fact, my HR20 is faster and more reliable than my SD TiVO.Sorry Dodger but it is more than a few models. My dad's new HR22 and my grandpa's HR22 are also pretty zippy. The only slow one I have experienced is my dad's old HR21 before it took a dive.

I have no doubt that the VIPs are faster than any HR. I was mostly addressing the problems people seem to repeat and equate to every model of HR.The Tivo units were terrible in regards to speed until the later software updates. As I said they HR units are not bad but they are slower than the Dish DVR's.
Cute dogYes, that is my baby.
I will agree on the current models, but I strongly disagree about the 510 being lightning fast.I also have been with dish for over 10 years.
510. basic sd dvr. Was great. Lightening fast. First HD dvr recievers that came out were loud and clunky.
However, since the 622 and 722-I feel dish has set a bench mark for set top boxes.

We have had or have currently active a 501/508/510 and all three models (have had more than one of each) are sluggish at best, at least the ones we have had were.
Fair enough. Seems common for us posters to have different experiences with various equipment. lolI just remember that the 301 and 510s that I have had were much faster than anything i had and have by Direc.
Just my take...
Well to be honest, The HR 20 is D* best HD DVR and they no longer make them. The HR-21's Slow to respond, HR-22 Slow to respond,I have no doubt that the VIPs are faster than any HR. I was mostly addressing the problems people seem to repeat and equate to every model of HR.

no DK, many are slow. just look up any HR models for their reviews and you'll be surpirsed how many have the same complaint. i'm not hating on D* because i love it but lets be honest here.besides if you ever use one of those E* dvrs that will be the day you understand where some of us are coming from. there is no reason or good excuse why we at D* can't have a dvr as responsive as E*'s dvrs are.Again, a few of one model is slow.

In my experince I would list the DVRs from best to worst as:
- HR20 (OTA tuner and the fastest)
- HR22
- HR21 (way below the others and very slow. This is the one with the most complaints)
I have not had experience with the HR23, so I have no idea where it would rank

The most recent NR is rumored to fix the speed issues. D* started the roll-out yesterday. That said Scott has a couple of different times on this site that he's hearing rumors that the next CE cycle is going to make the boxes significantly faster.
:upMost of the speed issues are due to the processor.
Just like a computer, if you have a slow processor your computer will run slower more often. Keeping the software efficient, removing crap, and creating a simpler OS will help the computer to an extent. Even a computer with the fastest processor can be slowed down by bloatware, inefficient software, and a poor OS, but it should still be faster than a computer with a slower processor. The fact that there are more speed issues with more units than the VIPs, tells me it is more of a hardware issue trying to be fixed by the software.
