I am new to FTA, I'm considering switching from Dishnetwork to cut down on monthly cost. I purchased a Digiwave 7200S receiver for $30. I have it hooked up to the Dishnetwork 500 satellite that was left behind. I am hitting the satellite Echo110 and it picks up a few of the channels. While doing the scan for channels, the system seems to 'lock up' after about 20 minutes and there is a rainbow of colors on the screen. I'm thinking that it is a system limitation with the receiver, but not being an expert, I can only guess. If I reboot the receiver, it comes back up normally and there are the few 'Info channels' from Dishnetwork. I'm just wondering why it seems to lock up - does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Also - since I'm using only an 18" dish, I know that I will not get much for channels, would the use of a 'smart card' help with this? The receiver is setup for one. If so, where would I buy one? I've seen some online, but I am very leary as I do not know what to look for.

any advice you can give is appreciated.

Welcome Deaver. The 18 inch dish might make an OK WOK for use while watch FTA, but it seems to only be usable FOR viewing Angel1 and NASA on 119W as FTA. Unfortunately some dealer are saying that you can legally steal Dish Network or DirecTV signals by loading "bin" file into your STB (receiver). That is not correct. Rumor has it that "Homeland Security" is enforcing this law since Sept. 1st, particularly with RV's at the US border (at least 6 reports) and at Boulder Dam (2 reports). Not nice to lose your RV! The smart card is used for subscription TV so will not help you for FTA.

That being said, the problem with locking up on 110 is probable, but not a problem for FTA since there is no FTA on that bird.

Look for 36 inch or larger dishes, used or new. The "Primestar" dishes were used in most areas for a while and very often are free for the asking. READ on and ENJOY FTA.
