Former Minnesota Wild forward and New York Ranger Derek Boogaard was found dead in his Minneapolis apartment Friday.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner confirms Boogaard's body was found in a building in the 400 block of 1st Street North. The cause of death has not been determined.
In a statement, the Minnesota Wild said Boogaard "will be greatly missed here in Minnesota and throughout the NHL. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Boogaard family during this tragic time of loss."
Boogaard played for the Minnesota Wild for the first five years of his NHL career. He left as a free agent to sign with New York.
In a statement, New York Rangers general manager Glen Sather called Boogaard "an extremely kind and caring individual. He was a very thoughtful person, who will be dearly missed by all those who knew him. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time."
During his tenure in St. Paul with the Wild, Boogaard grew into a true fan favorite. He only scored two goals in 255 games for the Wild, but earned his reputation as one of the toughest players in the NHL, amassing 544 penalty minutes.
Boogaard was 28 years old.
