What is the reason you are not allowed to delete your own post?

I was aware of that, but is it just the way the software for this site is written, or set for a reason by the staff?

There is a reason for it.

The site is a living history book that is continuously growing. To have someone come back at a later date and remove their posts ruins that history and makes discussions hard to follow. Therefore we give the members a limited time to delete their posts before it is a permanent part of the living history book.
