D* HR24, connecting to the Internet

Ordered D* online on Monday July5th. Installer came first thing Thursday morning July 8th. I ordered two HR24's for MRV. One in the bedroom and the other in the living room. Everything is working great. Installer did a great job. So now I want to connect my HR24 in the living room to the internet.

I have a 5 port switch located less than one foot from the HR24. so I simply hooked a ether from the HR24 to empty port on the switch. I thought this is easy. I will be watching my recorded programs on my PC in no time.

Not so fast. I starting to learn that hooking up the HR24 to the internet is not as easy as plugging ether from back of box to home network. Apparently I needed to order some kind of internet connection services.

My questions is... What do I get with this service? Will D* send me something in the mail that I can hook up or will an installer have to come out to the house?
 
When I replaced my boxes with the new HR24's I just plugged the ethernet plug into the same jack on my router the previous unit was plugged into. Nothing else special was done - however, my home computer music/pictures did not show up in the menu as it did on my previous boxes until I unplugged the box and plugged it back in. I did several things shut box off/on, reset box from setup menu, reset box with red button and none showed my network in the menu - as a last ditch effort I unplugged the box for 30 sec and when it was done with its setup procedure my network appeared in the menu.

On my install day, the tech plugged the livingroom HR24 into my router. Told me it might take a while for it to actually connect to the internet. It did...about a day or so. Today I plugged my bedroom HR24 into my router for the first time....because it involved dropping ethernet cable under the house...and am still waiting for it to connect. The tech did tell me that the 24's actually don't like to connect right away. Hang in there....hopefully it will connect itself.
 
When I connected my Ethernet it dropped the MRV. I unlplugged the ehternet and then I have MRV. this is an odd setup?
 
You will have to connect your router to the SWM splitter using an ethernet/coax adapter (DECA). If you connect the ethernet directly to either DVR it will disable the MRV features

Yep! Basically you need to have the DECA connected to your router and the coax cable end of the DECA goes back to the cable jack which runs to your SWM Splitter. Really this is the way the installers should be doing the installs which would save everyone some time. Due to this way it gets all of your receivers on the net with all the features and does the MVR as well. Make sure folks that are getting new installs they hook the DECA up if you want everything to work right the first time and save you and the installer extra trips.
 
Poke, Thanks. you are right on, because guess what. I spent no kidding probably several hours on the phone with Directv trying to get this situation resolved. After all said and done. I have ordered an internet connection kit $25 and the tech has to come back out this sat. to finish the install. I think I could have avoided this wasted time on the phone and the installer his time for coming back to my house and D* cust agents time talking with me if D* had better documentation about this install on their website when placing an order becuase from what i read this type of install is only applicable on the new HR24's. But if the HR24's is the only box shipping these days then they should have all this nonsense worked out already.
 
Discovered my problem on the second DVR was that I had a bad ethernet cable. Port on back of DVR did not light up. Even tried the cable in other devices like my laptop and still nothing. I will have to go get another cable today and go under the house for the THIRD time this week. Hopefully this will do the trick.

Yeah my installer had the DECA with him due to he knew that I wanted the MVR plus a internet connection to all the receivers so that way I could use all of those features as well. I think on the Direct site the connection kit is basically the DECA and having the coax cable drop back to the SWM Switch. Once he there just hooked the DECA to your router then plug the power in for it and the other end goes to the cable drop back to the SWM switch. Then you should see all 3 lights on the DECA go green then go to your receivers in the options for the Multi Room give them a name set that up. Then go to Network or might be called Advance to set the receivers up on the internet should get IP from your router run the test then it will tell you that your receiver has internet access. I see allot of folks trying to plug their ethernet into their receivers if you make sure the installer brings the DECA for your routers it will eliminate having to even have anything put into your receivers to begin with and will get everything up and running. Will save every time allot of time. After that you should be good to go. :)

You are rebooting the receiver after plugging in the cord, right?

On the H/HR24s only 1 connection can be active. When the receiver is booted if the Ethernet port doesn't come up the DECA (Ethernet over Coax) adapter turns on. If the Ethernet is plugged in, the internal DECA adapter is disabled.
 
So, you need an extra rg6 line from your (router/deca ethernet adapter) back to your multiswitch?

Yeah that what I did just had them put a coax drop in the room where my router was. Then put the DECA there plug it in run a small ethernet cable back to your router to the Deca then a coax cable back to the DECA back to your new cable jack. The new cable drop runs back to your SWIM switch which then pass your net connection to all of your receivers which saves from having to have anything plug into their ethernet port. Plus enables all you features for the receivers and gets MVR for all them as well..
 
Installer came out on Sat and installed the broadband DECA. Love the DIRECTV2PC. Everything works great except for the "APPS" when I hit the right arrow button I get error 22" internet not detected.

Are you still getting that error?? Might run the internet test again make sure it's detecting your connection.
 
Installer came out on Saturday the 10th for a new install (previously had Dish) with 3 HR24-100's. The installer said I HAD to have the DECA device is I wanted MVR and/or VOD. I questioned it, but ended up paying the $25 fee and the installer hooked it all up. All is good.

Sunday evening I get bored and removed the DECA device, plugged a Cat5e into each of the 3 receivers (all connected back to my network switch), reset each receiver, and re-ran the network setup.

MVR works perfectly, as well as VOD (sort of, there's an existing problem with my account that tech support is working on). I have successfully been able to download and HGTV VOD, so I can confirm VOD is working without the DECA. I have also successfully scheduled DVR recording via my PC at work and from my iPhone as well. So yes, they are all connected to the internet.

Last night I called D* and requested a refund on my $25 for the un-necessary DECA device. After being transferred to the equipment department, and after the phone tech talked to her supervisor, I was refunded the $25 without any further issue. The tech said that the HR24 has "an internal DECA". I have not tested that "theory" yet (only one receiver of the three plugged into the network), as all 3 are currently networked via Cat5e cables.

Now, if I can only get DirecTv's "system" to authorize VOD service for an HR24-100 (HR24-500s can, -100s can't for some reason) things will be 100%.
 
Kinda OT, but are there any good links/resources for HR24 vs other HR models, and DECA/MoCa vs normal network MRV?

We have an HR21 and I think an HR23... stuff is sloooooow. MRV on HR24 faster, closer to it being recorded on the same unit you'r watching from?

Edit: I have an HR22-100 and an HR23-700.

Deal with that is one not everyone going to have a network drop behind every receiver to do what you done. Also nice thing with the DECA it does all of that without having to have a drop behind all of your receivers so forth. We have a ethernet over powerline setup at home that works great. It supplies a connection to a switch that has 5 devices connected to it behind our entertainment center. I just wonder if id get better performance over coax or with hr24s.

Most likely DECA would be a better solution because the powerline adapters can have problems with inconsistent latency/jitter. Really unless you have twisted pair cabling running back to a switch (not a router w/ LAN ports), DECA will provide better performance.
