What a great site! I am a satellite guys virgin so be gentle. I am researching my satellite options. I was going to go with E* but after reading all the horror stories on service and equipment have deciced to go with D*. My question is...if I get the locals in my package will they be in sd or hd? I will be getting a hd receiver soon. If I need a ota antenna to get the locals in hd why should i shell the $5 a month for locals in my package?

Welcome to Satelliteguys!!

Your locals provided by Directv (hence forth D*) are in SD. They are rumored to start providing HD locals next year after their new satellite goes up, for the top 30 markets.

In order to see your locals in HD you will need an OTA antenna.

DIRECTV does provide CBS and NBC HD locals in 16 major DMA markets through the dish currently.

As Neutron says DIRECTV will add HD locals in almost all markets by May '05.

So would I be wise to just get the antenna and not spend the $5 amonth for the locals?

Only if:
1. You do not have any other TV's that need analog local channels from DIRECTV
2. You can get all of your locals from an OTA antenna.
