Countdown has begun - AMC 15

Personally, I think this turnaround is amazing. I don't know if it's the fact that they aren't as detail-oriented or as safety conscious in Kazakhstan, or if they're just more efficient. But, I couldn't imagine NASA launching two missions from the same site on the same day. It's really quite impressive.

Probably not near the red tape...(Gorbachov took care of that :) )

Gary,

You are right about the 18 hour turnaround from the Soyuz launch last night and this Proton launch with the AMC-15. Actually it is the Air Force that runs all the launch ranges including the one that NASA launches the Shuttle out of that is the tall pole. One factor is that the Russian launch site is out in the middle of nowhere while the ranges in Florida and California have significant population around them so there needs to be more precautions. Russian safety is more stringent in some areas than U.S./NASA and more lax in other areas.
