Hello,

I am new to this website. Hi everyone:)

I am having some difficulties to set up my new Coolsat 5000 box. I know there are a lot of experts on this website. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Recently I bought a Coolsat 5000 box and a Fortec Star dish (I believe it is 90 cm KU dish), and a Fortec Start FSKU-V universal single LNBF. I got this as a package from eBay.

Since the brand names of the dish antenna and the box don’t match it took me awhile to connect to one satellite which is AMC3 at 87W. As it turned out the elevation degree mark on the dish assembly is off by + 9 degree. So I got a few channels, PBS an English foreign channel from that single satellite.

I also have a satellite finder. I connect it between the dish and the box, then set the box to the satellite I want to find. Once the dish aims at the satellite correctly the finder will give me the maximum signal strength. Although sometime the satellite finder gives me maximum strength even when the dish is pointing somewhere else. I don’t know why.

So I try to connect to Galaxy 3C at 95W because I want to get some FTA Chinese language channel. I adjust the azimuth and the elevation based for that satellite in my location. I get the maximum signal strength from the satellite finder, the setup menu on the box shows 0 signal level and 0 quality (the level scale always shows close to the maximum scale in red, and the quality shows a little, about a single digit strength even when the dish is pointing somewhere else, or even dish is not connected).

Then I try a different FTA Chinese language satellite that has Chinese program, Satmex 5. Just like the Galaxy 3C I don’t get any luckier. One thing I noticed, that there is Satmex 5C and Satmex 5. Satmex 5C shows all 0 level scale and 0 quality scale regardless the postion of the dish or whether or not the dish is connected, and Satmex 5 shows almost full scale level in red, and a single digit or teen number for quality in red.

Another satellite that has FTA Chinese program is Telstar 5. It is even not listed. I am not sure if I can add it into the box. Based on Iceberg's review on Coolsat 5000 posted 12-5-2005 there is a way to do it but i don't know how.

Also I noticed that when I point the dish to Echostar 7 at 119W, I get green level scale and green quality scale. Then when I jump the box setting to a different satellite which is Echostar 1 without moving the dish, I get green level scale and quality scale too. But these two satellites are far apart.

From the setup menu on the box every satellite has many options. I don’t know how to set them or how to use them:
Satellite:
LNB Power: On, Off. I set to on. The finder needs it to be on.
LNB Type: Dual, Single and Universal. Based on the seller I set it to Universal.
LNB Freq: I use default without changing anything.
22KHz: I use default which is Auto.
DiSEqc Switch: Off.

Although I don’t really know what exactly these parameters mean every time when I configure a satellite I only change LNF Power to On and LNB Type to Universal, and leave anything else unattached.

Am I doing right?

Thanks.

looks like most of it is right. T5 is the same as IA5

Intelsat Americas is the new name for Telstar :)

On G3, the CCTV channels are really STRONG. Make sure you have the right frequencies

11780 frequency
H polarity
20760 symbol rate

I would also dump the signal meter as it will always pull you towards the stronger DBS satellites. Use the Signal quality meter only on the receiver, enter the Freq. SR. and polarity of a LIVE channel then watch the signal meter as you move the dish.

Thank Iceberg and PSB so much your response:up

So how to adjust frequency to 11780, polarity to H and symbol rate to 20760?

I can find the frequency 11780 for CCTV from lyngsat.com. Then for polarity and symbol rate how I can find them if I look for a different satellite? Or they are always the same across different satellites?

I looked at my Coolsat 5000 again last night. Under Galaxy 3C 95W the available values I can select are:
LNB Type OCS, Universal and Single.

When LNB Type is Universal the available Freq are:
9.750/10.600
9.750/10.750
00.000/00.000
22KHz: Auto only

When LNB Type is OCS the available Freq are:
5.150/5.750
5.150/5.70
00.000/00.000
22KHz: Off, On

When LNB Type is Single the available Freq are:
5.150
9.750
10.00
10.050
10.600
10.750
11.200
11.250
11.300
11.450
00.000
22KHz: Off, On

I don’t have a DiSEqc Switch.

I am not sure if this is the right place to set frquency, polarity and symbol rate?

Thanks much in advance.

set for Universal
9750/10600

when you log that in, save it and go to manual scan and see if 11780 (freq) H polarity 20760 symbol rate is there. It should be.

Once you have that transponder up, then you shuld be able to aim the dish

Do you have a motorized or fixed dish assembly? If you don't have a motor, you may need to skew (turn) the LNBF in its holder until you get quality.

Thanks everyone for your help.

The place I first started which is 'Auto Scan' was just a wrong place to start. I added the transponder then did a Blind Scan, the channel showed up crystal clear.

Appreciate everyone's input.
