I just had Dish installed two days ago, the installer hooked the dish up to the TV via "video cables" saying this provides better picture quality than regular coax cables. Well, I said ok that's cool but I decided today, heck if I ever want to watch a DVD I'm screwed so I looked in the Dish owners manual for correct hookup...

Conncecting a VCR/DVD to a nearby TV
-connect a coax cable from the ch.3-4 output on the DVR to the nearby VCR/DVD tuner port
-connect a coax cable from the output on the VCR to the nearby TV tuner port
-tune the TV to ch. 3

then since I do not want locals, I can get them here locally off air I hooked up a phillips amplfied antenna from the antenna to the TV antenna in on the DVR.

I CAN NOT GET Ch. 2 which is the NBC affiliate here, I've tried moving the satellite ch. to 4 but no go.

Any help would be appreciated! I'm not gonna subscribe just because I cant' get NBC but I know the channel comes in cause I had the antenna hooked directly to the TV the last couple of days since I've had Dish.

Thank you.

Are you turning the power off to the satellite receiver when you switch back to watch the off air channels? Also the receiver you have may have a screen saver which also broadcasts on channel 3 or 4 even with the power off.. i would recommend hooking up the sat box with the rca cables and then the antenna to the rf in on the tv and just switch inputs when you want locals.

Yea, turning the DVR off worked but geez, won't that wear it out ? I would hate to have to turn it off and on again just for locals.

Could you give me a list of connections "you" would recommend for this setup, DVD, DVR, TV, antenna.

IE: I want my DVD/VCR combo ready to go without unhooking and hooking again.

Thx

What model DVR do you have? I forgot about a function. If you want to keep rf connections, you might be able to leave it how you've got it. While the satellite receiver is on If you press the tv/video button while in "SAT" mode on the remote it will switch over to off air automatically, then you can change channels in "TV" mode. When you want to switch back to satellite press "SAT" then TV/Video.

If your tv only has one set of av inputs, then plug the dvr into the line inputs of the DVD/VCR combo and then plug the combo player into the video inputs of the tv and hook your antenna to the vcr's tuner. Then just leave the tv on the video input all the time and change channels on the combo unit. The video input of your combo unit should show as a regular channel with your locals on the vcr/dvd so you can watch the satellite thru it.

Ok, one thing that has changed from the post above is that I'm now 'trying' and I stress trying to run "s-video cables' from the DVR to the TV for best picture possible.

I would still like to have the off air antenna, along with a DVD player hooked up along with the DVR 625.

I didn't think a new thread was appropriate but at the same time I'm hoping someone can help.

Right now, I have my ps2 hooked up to TV "via composite" cables which are supposedly best picture possible. I have the DVR 's-video' connection connected to my s-video connection on my TV. My TV anntenna is hooked into the coaxial connection on the back of my TV. Simple right? WEll how do I work a DVD player with this setup? Is this possible? I'm out of composite and s-video connections but even if I could set it up using regular video cables (red, white, yellow) that would be fine but I need your help on how.

Please help

Buy an audio video switch at Walmart. Around 20.00. You can plug four components into the switch and then plug the switch into the tv. Just push a button on the switch for whatever component you want to use.

Question with that is...

I prefer to have my ps2 hooked with component (the best quality) to the TV, would this work?

I know (looking today) that most audio/video selectors just have s-video or composite connectors, is their a way around this running ps2 component cables directly to the TV component?

Thank you for yoru patience

EDIT: I notice very little change on Dish network using regular composite (red, white, yellow) cables and s-video?

They make a switcher that does composite, s video, and component video. It has four inputs and then can be output to the tv. I use it on my 50 inch JVC hdtv for ps2 and progressive scan dvd recorder. If I upgrade to a 622 from my 522 I will probably move my standalone hd tuner to it also. It has worked fine for a year now. It was 25.00 at Walmart. I will eventually upgrade my surround receiver to one that does component switching and move everything to it. It is Pelican pl-970
