Is it possible for those of us with a residential account to cancel that out and go with a couple of commercial Dish packages instead?
They do.Wow. For whatever reason, I thought commercial packages cost MORE.
You are correct sir. They sure do seem to cost more, partly because of how the packages are arranged. Want the news channels, fine but CNN and FOX are not in it, and in fact each of those are in two yet different packages. It is split like that for channels like TNT, separate from USA and A&E. Want AMC, that's in yet a another package. TLC and HGTV are in yet another package. If there happens to be a couple of packages that meets your needs, you will pay less. But it's a very different and fractured way of getting the channels you may usually watch.
Just picking a core package and four other packages costs only $8 less than the Top250, (Somewhat depending on what packages you pick) and you would get nowhere near the channels. Pick just one more package and you are over the TOP250 and still don't have all the channels. Again, the problem is how the channels are spread among the packages.
It's funny that in the starter package, they still have the old WB network as one of the locals. Also, ESPN HD at $80 per month? Really? You would think with all the money they get from the residential subs, they'd be willing to offer it for less. Typical greedy mouse.
There's your a la carte packages everyone has been asking for. Sounds great until you see your favorite channels split into different groups and now you find yourself paying more for less.

I've never believed that a la carte would result in cheaper monthly costs to a customer unless they were very, very strict about what channels they really, really wanted and were willing to give up a channel or channels. I mean, if you like ONE program on a network, be prepared to give it up 'cause once you start adding channels a, b, c, and d just to keep seeing ONE program that you like, you've defeated the purpose. There's your a la carte packages everyone has been asking for. $80 bucks, per month, for a bar or restaurant ? Pfffft ! I don't think too many will refuse to pay that thinking it's too expensive. Also, ESPN HD at $80 per month? Really?
I don't like paying it for an office. But, the CEO and other execs like their sports. March is the big college hoops period, too, isn't it?$80 bucks, per month, for a bar or restaurant ? Pfffft ! I don't think too many will refuse to pay that thinking it's too expensive.
So really, the price doesn't matter, right ?But, the CEO and other execs like their sports....
Yep, and also add an option for metered tiers as well.My idea.....Have both base/core packages, and ala carte. At least that way folks could have some choice to have,or not to have sports channels.I honestly think having both would attract more customers.

Scherrman said:Dish's programming for bars is terrible. There is a reason you never see it in any bars at all especially when DirecTV has Sunday Ticket. If you were running a bar and wanted to get Dish, first you would have to get their Starter Pack which is only local channels and cost $20. Then you have to pick at least one more package which are priced at $12 and spread all ocer the place. The Learning Pack is probably one of the best values as for watched channels. Then you get into Sports, which all bars really care about since that's what most customers want to watch there. Some sports packages are as low as $12 but if you want the ESPNs in HD you have to pay a minimum of $76 and if you have an FOC more than 50 it can cost $83 or $120.
If I were running a bar with an FOC of 1-50 and had Dish these are the packages I feel I would need. Starter Pack $20, Variety A $12, Variety B $12, Variety C $12, News $12, Sports A $12, Sports B $12, ESPN HD $76,CSN Chicago $30 and Big Ten Network $40. No that is skipping out channels that I would like but wouldn't need and I'd still be paying $238 a month for TV. Don't forget any extra receiver fees also.
If you think that is high, NFL Sunday ticket for DirecTV alone is around $1000 for the season depending on your FOC.
Edit: The prices I used were off of some literature I have. Forgot that they raised some of these packages. So you may need to add some to my total but you get the point.
Your absolutely right. All the bars I sold Dish to eventually all switched to Directv.
Only thing that Dish packages are good for is if you plan to leave the tv on the same channel all the time
