Comcast Enters HD Quality Dispute

By James Hibberd
This week Comcast launched a major ad campaign that opened a new battlefront in the HD service provider war: comparative picture quality.

Touting a study by Frank N. Magid Associates, Comcast took out full-page newspaper ads in 15 markets claiming its HD picture quality is superior to satellite competitors DirecTV and Dish.

"We always knew we offered more HD choices, and we always thought we had more convenient HD service and better HD picture quality, but now we can prove it by a fairly overwhelming margin," said Page Thompson, senior VP and general manager of video services at Comcast.

Mr. Mercer added that an independent company surveyed home theater installers last year, who said, by a 4-to-1 margin, that DirecTV had the best signal quality.

:D :D G.... They were wearing $$$$ in the eyes :D :D

I've got Comcast right now. It use to be TWC. And here in the Memphis area it has a better PQ than D* did. I left D* about 2 years ago.

The only think I don't like is when Comcast took over we lost HDNet and HDNet Movies. Hopefully Comcast will get a contract with HDNet soon. Which reminds me. Time to send the local Comcast office my montly email asking for them to add HDNet back.

BTW, Comcast 800-number customer service is not very good. When we lost HDNet, I called and asked them to pass it on that I would like to have it back. I was told by the CR that would be impossible because HDNet no longer exists. Oh Brother!

D* HD quality sucks. Comcast is dead on!!!! About time someone challenged those ba$terds!

I have D** with an H-20 receiver and also Comcast with their Moto DVR 6412 and to be honest, I think they are equal in pq. Now OTA, that you can't beat!

I am in the Memphis area and have D and Comcast. My D picture is a whole lot better then Comcrap. Also, the standard pic quality on comcast is horrible.

I don't care if I get banned, you are pitiful. I see you didn't repost this in the DISH forum, You came right over here and started a flame thread. You are no moderator but troll. You guys try to say your more objective than DBStalk and AVS , but I can't tell.

I see the "bash D*" folks are out in full force...
I have D* and have so since HD was turn on by them, so with my years I have a right to bash them. They need the fix the ____ problem and the bashing will stop, until then I will continue with my personal bashfest!:p

DUDE! Chill out! Does it really matter which sat provider is being targeted. You should be happy for the fact that Cable is now challenging PQ which will hopefully benefit everyone in the long run. D* compressed the signal more than E* so, if you look at it that way this really is the right forum. We all will stand together for better PQ!:up

I don't care that cable is doing that. Comcast in my area is good. This was a pure troll thread started by a moderator. comcast talked about both, so post the article in both forums. Don't come here to start crap.

To be fair to all providers...

Our local Comcast (formerly Adelphia) does an excellent job with the handful of HD channels in their local lineup - hard to distinguish the difference between OTA; they just suck at delivering decent analog PQ, have a history of price gouging their customers, and are horrible in every aspect of customer service. While HD picture quality often differs by location, by and large cable is doing a better job than satellite at this time.

Dish Network offers lots of HD at various picture quality - some good/some bad, some great/some terrible. DirecTV HD PQ just plain stinks all the way around - my loyal D* friends could not believe how much better the alternative are until they saw it side-by-side with their own eyes.

What really seals the deal in favor for cable is FiOS TV...they deliver the best SD/HD picture quality in the business. If customers are wanting the best picture possible, and if they can tolerate their less than stellar HD DVR, they FiOS TV is a "no-brainer" if available. Of course, with only 400K customers it is not widely available at this time...and rural customers may as well forget about ever seeing fiber-to-the-home.

grydlok,

you need to cool my friend. This is not a death situation. We try to get away from posting or having the same discussion on two forums for the same discussion. Just because I posted here does not make me a troll or have anything to do of being against D*. In the article, E* stayed away from speaking or making a comment about Comcast claim. This does not make them better than D*. D*, however, decided to talk (all over the article) about how great their PQ is. We know that this is not the case but D* insists that it is.

Ultimately, we all want better PQ and we want D* to take notice that their HD PQ is not as great as they think it is. Does this makes me a troll or D* basher? I think you should research my previous posts on the E* forum and see how critical I have been on the HD PQ quality. As I may pointed out, the title of the thread is about "satellites". I did not singled out D*. Both D* & E* deserve a kick in their butts so that they start giving us what we pay for and not the crap that we are getting now.

I hope this clears it up...

I am a D* supporter and do not take issue with your post. You could though change your signature and at least take Dish down a notch, shouldn't ir read, Good TV, Dish, better TV OTA ??
Oh, and if Turd TV includes MLB EI and NFL ST, keep the turds a flyin!

I find it funny with all the E* subs bashing D* PQ this test shows that D* PQ is better then E*. I like that Comcast came out with this study. PQ wars are always good to have. But Dish, this study proves you have a lower PQ then then D*. I do find it odd that the OP/Mod only posted this in the D* forum and not the E*?

Yup, strange study. I am certain that Comcast's PQ, does in fact vary depending on where your service is. That said, your right, if you give this any validity (which I don't) then you have to admit the same validity that the survey concludes that D* PQ is better than E*. My conclusion, toss this one into the crapper!

Perhaps Comcast's claim can be substantiated in the 15 markets targeted with the ad if in those markets Comcast delivers their HD signals at full rez and bitrate. If their available BW in those markets is being allocated to best PQ, how many channels can they ultimately offer? All delivery technologies have BW limitations, with FIOS far out in front as to potential capacity.

As many have mentioned, HD PQ is variable across the cable installed base. Less so for the DBS subs, where we all receive programming in less-than-highest quality (OTA excepted)...
