Comcast Announces More the 1,000 HD Choices

Looks like Comcast has gone to a different counting system, counting programs/movies and not channels.

It does raise an interesting question in that the current metric is channel count. We are now moving into an on demand model, and Comcast is leading the way there.

How do you count PPV? One channel per PPV isn't right, but 1 channel for all PPV isn't right either.

\My Comcast has most of this month's HBO and Showtime lineups (the others too) available On Demand. I would think that might be counted as having HBO, but I value it higher, because I don't have to wait and then record.

There is also stuff in the On Demand section that isn't available on the normal cable channels. A lot of '60s and '70s sitcoms, new car promos, movies, porn, etc.

So again, how do you count this stuff?

It should be by channels that everyone can get. Leave out on demand, leave out any rsn that only certain areas can get, leave out ppv channels,etc.

When you read the article it says "we started with 12 hd channels, now we have 1000 hd choices."

More funny counting. Next instead of MAX-hd counting as 1 channel, it will be 250 hd choices

One thing cool about Comcast's HD-On Demand. They don't have the USA or FX HD channels yet, BUT we do get the new HD primetime shows available On Demand, such as Sons of Anarchy, Mad Men, etc....

No need to carry the channel just yet, but you still get all the good shows, and probably most of the HD actually on the channel.

I still can't see FX-HD on DISH yet..........

Comcast went to the Charlie school of addition. At least their HD won't be "soon"

I have both Comcast and Dish (I needed the Comcast internet, and threw in the cable TV temporarily just to see what it was like). Comcast really does blow Dish away in the OnDemand department. And a significant part of that OnDemand is free - including HD movies.

However, the Comcast DVR sucks swamp water compared to the Dish DVR. Picture quality is a toss-up between the two. True HD (excluding stretch-o-vision) is great on both, SD is terrible on both.

Overall I think Dish has more HD though. But I haven't done a side-by-side comparison. This is mostly because the Comcast DVR is so clunky to use that you rarely want to mess with it if you can find something on Dish instead.

If I wanted to drop one or the other (which I *will* do soon), Comcast will be the one to go. No question about that.

Uh, since they put up the new BBS release, my edit button hangs when I post at work, as does quick response. If you go look in the operation center, you will see a thread I posted on this several months ago. Thanks for trying to help though.

You can't really do this by all of Comcast either, since every region has a different channel set. It isn't fair to do a logical OR of every channel offered by every Comcast system, but it also isn't fair to do a logical AND either.

The OnDemand really is a major selling point. My system has hundreds of choices at any time, and Rockford has one of the less capable Comcast systems. As I said earlier, there probably is no good metric to compare. Comcast has a definite advantage here, and it is something they need to promote. Those of you on satellite probably can't appreciate the value of this feature. Kind of like explaining the value of a DVR to someone who has never had it.

BTW, fully agree with the Motorola DVR sucking swamp water.
