Hello, I have a question that I have not been able to find the answer to. I am going to be going deaf in a few weeks due to a brain tumor removal surgery and I am trying to get things set up before hand. I have an Echostar 4700 receiver connected to my computer that I am using as a dvr. The capture card I have right now will not record closed captioning. I am planning on getting a new card that has that ability, but I thought in the mean time there might be a way to have the satellite receiver do the closed captioning and then my computer will record it. Is there a way to do this with the EchoStar 4700? Thank you in advance.

No the receiver passes the CC to your TV set for the TVset to decode. You will need to get a TV with CC or get the card upgraded fast.

The tv does have closed captioning, but it is connected directly to my computer since I use my computer as a dvr. The capture card I have right now does not have a closed captioning option. I was just checking to see if there is a way to do it directly on the echostar 4700. Since there is not I am going to get a Hauppauge 350 capture card instead of the old ATI one that I have now. Thank you for the quick response.

If the capture card captures the entire video signal it should work. But from what you're describing, it sounds like it's only capturing the displayable video and not the extra information in the signal. Either that or what you are using for playback is stripping it out.

Correct, the capture card I am using does not capture the additional info sent over signal. I am planning on getting a Hauppauge 350 soon, which will capture it. I know that getting that card will fix my problem. I though that there may be a code or something for my sat receiver that would show the closed captioning on the video before it gets to my computer so that I could get closed captioning to work before I get the new tv capture card. Apparently there is not a way to do it with my sat receiver though so I will just have to buy the new capture card now. Thank you for all the responses.

Would it be easier to get a DVR and simply mute the TV when you play back a program, or is there a specific reason you are going thru your computer and still using the 4700?

I am using the 4700 because that is the satellite receiver that I have. I am running through a computer because I am running MythTV on it and use it as a dvr, then I have multiple front ends set up connected to all the other tv's in the house. That way I can record all the shows with the one computer, and watch them whenever I want on any of the tv's in the house.

Very Disappointed in Setanta Guide
