...is shaping up like the career of Billy Rohr, who threw a complete game, one hit shutout, in Yankee Stadium (Elston Howard single with 2 out in ninth) in his April 14, 1967 major league debut and followed it up with a complete game, 6-1 win over the Yankees a week later, but never won another game for the Red Sox, pitching ineffectively in each subsequent start.

After two impressive victories over the Yankees, lefty Billy Rohr was bombed three times in a row. In those starts he gave up 12 runs and 15 hits in less than eight innings.

The next year, he was traded to Cleveland, where he also pitched ineffectively in relief and was released at the end of the year. For his "career", he pitched just 60.2 innings with an earned run average of 5.64.

Billy Rohr 1967 Game by Game Pitching Logs

Buchholtz was sent back to the minors yesterday for "re-tooling". Basically, he just can't pitch when he is behind in the count. I watched the Orioles telecast of the game he pitched against them this week, and they said there were some hitter's counts where they hit over .400 against him.

or bud smith (besides the no hitter, can you think of anything memorable in bud smith's short career?)

edit: albeit with the cardinals instead of the red sox?
