Cingular, the nation’s largest wireless provider, is launching a broadband service to let users connect laptops to the Internet.
BroadbandConnect is available in Tacoma, Seattle and Portland, the company said Tuesday.
The service combines a laptop modem card, Cingular’s Communication Manager software and a Data Connect plan to produce average mobile data connections between 400 and 700 kilobits per second.
The company also added 70 cell sites in Washington in 2005 to improve its network as part of a $205 million investment, which includes putting the high-speed data network on the air. Cell sites now include locations in Puyallup and Tacoma and near Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base, and a system inside the Capitol.
