As reported here
Google's Chrome OS to arrive on hardware "later this fall"

Highlights:
- ChromeOS = Chrome browser + Ubuntu
- running on ARM with Tegra 2
- Google working on a tablet running Chrome OS
- New app market likely

"We are working on bringing the device later this fall," Pichai said, according to a report by AFP. "We expect it to reach millions of users on day one."

Most likely means it will be work on current devices, maybe even Atom based netbooks.

Talking about non-standard OSs on netbooks: I just tried MeeGo on Dell Latitude 2100 (aka "corporate netbook").
The OS is free, copy to a USB and boot from it. Takes between 15 and 20 seconds. Sees all hardware: network, wireless, bluetooth, SD, etc.
Connects to SMB shares. Very fast Chrome v.5 browser.

Downside: can't play most video, including XviD/DivX...
