channels with dash

how come I am able to enter a channel number, dash, and then another number. What is that and what does it mean?

Some affiliates offer analod and digital and digital sub channels (like area info or 24hr weather with radar) so an example would be:

13 (main analog channel)
13.1 or 13-1 or 13-001 'digital' (depending on the receiver)
13.2 'digital sub channel
13.3 'digital sub channel'
etc

You can go to zap2it.com and type in your zip code and the select "local broadcast - antenna" to see what sub channels are offered in your area via OTA.
